but the difference affects only
a small part of the component.
The capability to produce three
different threads could give
processors flexibility and saves
time.
" In the world today, volumes
can fluctuate quite strongly,
especially for automotive molders, "
Kiesl said. " This is a neat
application to show where the
market can go in the future. "
In the other demonstration,
multimaterial rulers are made
on a 200-metric-ton press partly
from a bio-based plastic
(BIiofibre's Lenta). This ruler
combines insert overmolding,
multicomponent molding and
post-injection marking and assembly.
The
rulers have a level that
uses gravity in the form of a
glass liquid vial with an air bubble
to measure straightness.
" The water weight requires a
tight window of tolerance so the
glass won't break, " Kiesl said.
The mold is turned by Billion's
integrated rotary shaft
called EasyTurn.
Founded in 1949 by Léon
Billion, the company has decades
of experience in injection
molding machine design and
manufacturing, including standard
thermoplastics machines,
multi-injection equipment and
other plastic processing solutions
for the automotive, packaging,
medical, cosmetics, electronics,
household appliances
and building sectors.
With most markets impacted
by broader economic trends,
Billion officials said they continue
to see demand, especially
from packaging and consumer
products processors seeking to
be more sustainable.
" For Billion, as a multimaterial
specialist, we have a long history
of dealing with recyclates,
which serves us well in today's
climate, " Kiesl said. " Our machine
process adjustment control
called EasyControl, which
helps to account for batch
heterogeneity, and our sandwich
encapsulation technology,
which hides recyclates within
a layer of virgin material, have
been in high demand. "
Interest in the circular economy
has been very strong, Kiesl
said.
" However, the supply side
continues to be a hurdle with
accessibility to good quality recycled
material still being difficult, "
he added.
Demand also is up for all-electric
machines to save on energy
bills.
" Hydraulics are exorbitant, "
Kiesl said. " An all-electric machine
can save 60-70 percent
on bills. That's a no-brainer. In
Europe, we have customers that
had $400,000 a year electricity
bills, and today they are looking
at paying $1.5 million. "
The role of machine builders
in the plastics industry is multifaceted,
but one area is getting
more attention, Kiesl also said.
" Machine builders play a crucial
role in offering guidance
and solutions to molders in
search of satisfying consumer
demand with increasingly sustainable
and competitive applications, "
he said.
