bottle-to-bottle recycling
with recoStar PET art

There is plenty of science behind
Starlinger & Co. GmbH's new
bottle-to-bottle PET recycling
line. But there also is some art,
said Paul Niedl, commercial head
for recycling technology at the Vienna-based
equipment maker.
Starlinger is out with its new
recoStar PET art recycling line, being
talked about for the fi rst time
ever at K 2022. In development
for the past two and a half years,
the recoStar PET art system reimagines
the company's previous
approach to bottle-to-bottle recycling
equipment called recoStar
PET iV+.
RecoStar PET art succeeds the
company's previous
technology that was
fi rst
introduced
in
2005 and has served
the company and
customers well, Niedl
said, selling 25-30 systems
per year.
" We've been excosts
associated with it. That's
why we come up with the art. "
The new recoStar PET art line
will save customers an estimated
21 percent in production costs
compared with the previous system,
Niedl said. That includes all
costs associated with production,
including the equipment purchase
price and energy.
The new system makes changes
in both the dryer and extruder
systems, simplifying these aspects
of the machine. RecoStar
PET art puts more emphasis and
increases the size of the solid
state polycondensation recycling
technology system that decontaminates
used PET for use in new
food-grade applications.

with this type of equipment, "
Niedl said. " We're like super
successful. It's not like we had a
problem that we couldn't sell them
anymore. It was successful. "
It was just time to take another
look at bottle-to-bottle recycling
and consider changes thanks to
the number of years that have
gone by, he said.
" You just have to stay ahead of
the game. If you are not further developing
yourself, one day the competition
is taking over, " Niedl said.
" We just thought it was a combination
of technology and experience
and in a way, in a certain
way, it's probably art to come up
with a product that is based on
the roots that we had before, " he
said. " We are able to reduce the

" Our top goal was
not to compromise
anything on chip [pellet]
quality because
that's what we are
known for in the market, "
he said.
" We didn't want to compromise
that. That was the top goal. But
what we did want to achieve, and
we achieved, was just the reduction
in energy, maintenance, footprint,
and we also increased the
output, " Niedl said.
" We reduced the energy consumption
by 25 percent - big
number, " he said. " We increased
the output by 15 percent. " Overall
annual maintenance time falls by
46 percent. " You are reducing the
cost associated with running the
equipment. The up time is higher
now. ... It's just a cost factor. "
Starlinger already has sold one
recoStar PET art machine that's
now operating for a longtime customer
in Romania.
You just have to stay
ahead of the game. If
you are not further developing
yourself, one day the
competition is taking over. "
