Igus using more recycled
plastics, reducing
carbon footprint

Stefan Loockmann-Rittich, head
of the business unit. " But for
our future and for the future of
our customers, because they
want to get greener, we want to
be greener. "
Cologne, Germany-based Igus
is introducing a new model of
plastics for motion concept,
where it takes recycled plastic
and gives it new life by reusing
it in creation of a bike. This bike
development was done with the
help of a startup company in
the Netherlands, MTRL.
Igus
makes self-lubricating
motion plastics for mountain
bikes, so the concept bike is
smooth operating, quiet and
made with durable recycled
plastics. It does not rust and
won't need any maintenance.
As a company, Igus is focused
on using 100 percent recycled
materials in its products. It also
is making materials that wear
less easily and last longer.
" This year
our focus
is based on
showing
our customers
what can be the next life
of a plastic material, " Loockmann-Rittich
said.

Last year Igus began to research
the carbon footprint of
its products and share the information
with customers. Now
it is helping customers reduce
their carbon footprint.
The company also introduced
a new program where it will
take back used plastic chains
from customers and then recycle
the technical plastics into
new chains. Through this program,
Igus has collected 60 tons
of material.
Igus also works with Commonplace
Robots GmbH to make
components for robots from
plastic. This will lead to more
new developments, according
to Alexa Heinzelmann, head of
international marketing.
Igus also recently announced
plans to invest $200 million
into
a 707,000-square-foot,
carbon-neutral expansion of
its Igus Inc. unit in East Providence,
R.I. That project is expected
to create 150 new jobs
to manufacture self-lubricating
plastic products such as cables,
ball bearings, screws and nuts.
