Now is a good time to be in the
recycling machinery business.
And it's an especially good time
for Polystar Machinery Co. Ltd.,
the Tainan City, Taiwan-based
maker of integrated recycling systems
for a variety of resins.
As chief marketing offi cer for
Polystar, David Lo has a front seat
view of the increase in demand
for his company's products over
the past several years in general
and specifi cally the spike the
company has experienced during
the past two years.
While Polystar has seen sales
growth throughout the world, Lo
only has to point to one particular
location to show just how strong
demand can be in these days of
intense interest in increasing plastic
recycling.
" In recent years, the Japanese
market has been a big market, " Lo
said, for the company that sold 15
recycling systems into that country
last year. A typical year for Polystar
in Japan used to be fi ve machines.
It is no surprise that recycling
equipment machinery makers all
over the world are enjoying heady
times, and they are selling their
wares all over the world themselves.
For Polystar, that means both
North America and South America
as well as Europe, Asia and Africa.
Along with Japan, Lo pointed
to Vietnam and Indonesia as good
markets for the company in that
part of the world. Russia and India
also are proving to be signifi -
cant for the fi rm these days.
Polystar makes production
lines where customers can feed
used plastic into one end and end
up with recycled pellets on the
other. Polyethylene and polypropylene
are two key markets for
the company, but Polystar machinery
can process a variety of
resin types.
One reason customers buy

from Polystar, the CMO said, is
the company's quick turnaround
on orders of between 100 and 120
days. The company, which has
machines in 110 countries, does
pre-build some equipment as it
forecasts market trends.
Growth during the past couple
of years, which has seen sales increase
by a total of about 30 percent,
has resulted in the company
increasing employment from
about 50 workers to about 70
workers, Lo said.
Polystar uses automation to
help keep staffi ng levels lean
while still being able to handle the
increased demand for its products
in a timely fashion, he said.
" The recycling business has
become more and more popular.
I think the last two, three years
all the logistical costs and raw
material costs keep rising at this
moment. So the recycling business
has become more and more
popular and has strong market
demand, " he said.
Regulations, of course, are helping
spur interest, especially in Europe,
where incoming rules will
require 25 percent post-consumer
resin content for PET bottles by
2025 and 30 percent by 2030.
Along with the increased demand
in machinery in general, Lo
said his company also is getting
more orders for larger-capacity
equipment that can run more material
through each hour.
Polystar also looks to provide
a high level of automation with
its machinery as well as a focus
on Industry 4.0, a term used to
describe how machinery makers
are tying their equipment to internet-based
solutions.
Making machines easier to operate
is a key these days due to
labor costs and the fact that companies
continue to struggle fi nding
workers, he said.

an example of rising sales for
recycling equipment. The Taiwanbased

that used to order fi ve.
