Illig updates HMI with
easier-to-use panel

For 15 years, Illig Maschinenbau
GmbH & Co. KG, a thermoforming
machine, tooling and
packaging systems company, has
been using the same human-machine
interface. With a big shift
to a digital screen, Illig is hoping
to please more customers.
" Our existing HMI, it's about
15 years old, so it was not so user-friendly,
I will say. Now we have
developed a new HMI with new
parts, " said Michael Maier, technical
product manager at Illig.
Illig has created a new HMI
with an easier-to-use panel for
operators to work on and that
contains all the settings for
each section of the machine in
one place.
" Now we'll be ordering the
tasks according to what people
are doing, not the technical
aspects of the machine, " said
Andreas Raisch, development
engineer at Illig.
On the screen, companies can
upload new content easily, such
as videos or tutorials to personalize
their HMI screens. When viewing
the controls, things are color-coded
and matched so there
is less written instruction and a
better fl ow to the understanding.
All the features and tabs on
the screen can control the axis,
movement, change the tooling,
change the process and change
the material, as well as different
sections of the machine such
as thermoforming, stacking and
box filling.
At K 2022, the new HMI system
is displayed on the RDM
73K, a more advanced version
of the company's best-selling
machine, the RDM 70K. The machine
has both a larger forming
area and is faster, leading to a
30 percent increase in output.
Illig improved its main drive
and planetary gear and created
a higher stiffness. The machine
can also dry faster even though
the forming area is bigger.
" The customer wants to have
the cups as cheap as possible.
And with a bigger output at the
same time. You've got a higher
number of cups with the same
energy and the same space, "
Maier said.
The machine also has an
update to achieve a better energy
efficiency. That includes
improvements to the heater,
closed heating boxes and a
heating tunnel. The company
machine can also use up to 50
percent less air.
" That's a huge amount because
air is also very expensive
for the customer, " Maier said.
" There's a lot of electrical power
to produce this air. "
Illig sells about 40-50 machines
a year.
