In the monosandwich process,
the core component material is
metered in the main injection
unit, while the skin component is
placed in front of the core component
using the secondary extruder.
When injected into the mold,
the main virgin component fl ows
into the cavity before the core
component for the sandwich construction
of the part, which then
has PCR material on the inside and
virgin material for the outer layer.

Milacron offers monosandwich
technology in an electric press

has integrated its monosandwich
(MSW) technology into an all-electric
machine platform.
The eQ180-MSW is making its
European premiere at Fakuma
2024, where company offi cials
said the MSW process is more
relevant than ever before as an increasing
number of processors realize
how their production affects
the circular economy.
The eQ180 produces multilayer
parts using post-consumer recycled
(PCR) materials with technology
Milacron co-pioneered
more than 30 years ago but hadn't
integrated it into an all-electric
machine platform until now.
" By integrating PCR into the
core of the injection molded part,
upwards of 60 percent of the core
can be recyclable material with our
eQ180, " said Alexander Boos, managing
director of Milacron Europe.
At Fakuma 2024, a four-cavity
eQ180 is producing multilayer hinges
with a shot weight of 96 grams
in a cycle time of 61.5 seconds with
a force of 180 metric tons and a
screw diameter of 50 millimeters.
Boos said the hinges are for
fl oor mops from Vermop that are
usually processed with an acetal
material. At Fakuma, for the MSW
application, polypropylene -
PHC28 from Sabic - is the skin
material, and Systalen PP-C14002,
a PCR from Germany's Green Dot,
is the core material.
MSW technology lets processors
increase the recycled content of
products, lower the product cost
and improve product strength or
surface quality, Boos said.
The fully electric machine and
its low energy consumption are a
perfect match for the MSW application,
Boos added.
The all-electric eQ platform is
controlled by the latest generation
of servo drives, which company
offi cials said results in maximized
acceleration, precise control and
reduced cycle times. Branded as
the Regenerative Servo Drive, the
technology also lowers energy
consumption by feeding excess
energy back to the power supply.

robot retrieves the hinges.
Meanwhile, Milacron's mold
and ejector protection technology
provides a continuous monitoring
system to minimize mold repair
costs and reduce downtime without
sacrifi cing speed. The closedloop
process senses the presence
of leftover articles from the last
process cycle or any foreign object
between the core and the cavity.
Boos said the technology is not
new, but it was improved.
" The closing torque is monitored
during each closing cycle and compared
to a confi gurable tolerance
band. As soon as a deviation is detected,
a user warning is issued and
the machine stops, " Boos said.
Milacron developed and patented
MSW technology, which it
co-pioneered with toilet seat maker
Bemis Manufacturing Co. of
Sheboygan Falls, Wis., more than
30 years ago.
" This gives us a tremendous advantage
related to our monosandwich
capabilities based on our
historical knowledge, " Boos said.
