hen the submission was made
for this year's Materials Innovation award, RPC was still the
owner of bpi Protec. Since then, American
packaging specialist Berry has completed
its takeover of the British packaging manufacturer.
It's confirmation that the company
was an attractive investment, due in large
part to the innovation behind its product
range. That includes the new X-EnviroShrink shrink wrap film, which took this
year's Materials Innovation award against
some very worthy competition.
"X-EnviroShrink is the first shrink film
to incorporate post-consumer recyclate
(PCR). The film is also recyclable in of itself, where there are suitable collection
schemes," said Gareth Lloyd, marketing
manager at bpi group.
Key to X-EnviroShrink is the Sustane
product. Manufactured by bpi recycled
products, Sustane is an example of how
a closed-loop approach can play a critical role in creating successful sustainable
packaging solutions.
Lloyd offered further details: "Sustane
has gained the European Certificate for
Plastics Recycling. That gives our customers confidence in both the quality
and traceability standards being followed
throughout the recycling process of
post-consumer waste, together with the
ability to ascertain the source of any recycled material."
The X-EnviroShrink film contains up
to 75% recycled content, of which a min-

imum is 30% post-consumer recyclate.
This, while delivering the same levels of
performance and functionality as products manufactured from virgin materials.
The films can be used for production
of a variety of packaging solutions, including the shrink wrapping of canned drinks.
In response to public opinion, a series of
drink producers have recently switched to
board-based packaging alternatives. But
Lloyd believes such moves don't take all
relevant aspects into account.
"We believe that with its lightweight
profile, recycled content and recyclability,
X-EnviroShrink is one of the most sustainable solutions for the multi-packing of cans,
bottles and other goods. We will be working with all our customers to ensure that
any product comparison includes a full
analysis of the sustainability and environmental impact of each solution," he said.
Lloyd added that in setting new standards in circularity, X-EnviroShrink is also
offered at a competitive price to help improve its market appeal. Moving forward,
bpi Protec is going to be looking at ways
to increase recycled plastics content in
the film.
Having taken home the award, Lloyd
says that the trophy will be on display in
the office reception. "We were delighted
to be shortlisted and very proud to have
won this award," said Lloyd. "Winning is
the perfect recognition for all the hard
work from everyone on the team and acknowledgment of the sustainability of our
latest packaging solution."
