SIMPLE SCHOOL
CHANGES THAT BOOST
WORK FORCE TRAINING
K-12 STEM RECRUITMENT

K-12 schools in Union County, Ohio, teach students
about viable careers in manufacturing, with activities
such as bus tours to facilities, said Jeff Spain,
supervisor in work-force innovation at Columbus State
Community College. Educators also help identify
students who would be good fits for a career path in
science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Marysville Early College High School offers
three pathways to graduation, one of which is
advanced manufacturing. The school soon will
offer an automotive technician pathway. Students
will graduate with a high school diploma and an
associate's degree from Columbus State.

Columbus State helps Honda market the work-study program to
high school students. Here, students work in a lab at the college.

It started with six students, all of whom were hired into full-time positions.
Since then, Honda has brought on eight to 10 students per year and has
hired more than 95 percent of them into full-time positions, McLemore
said. Those Honda didn't hire went to work for a Honda supplier or another manufacturing company.
"Our approach to recruitment is, we partner with industry," Spain said.
Other than Honda, industry partners include Worthington Industries,
Autotool Inc. and Stanley Electric. Most companies take two to four students per year, but some of the larger organizations take as many as 12.
Most students end up working full time for the company they interned
with, Spain said.

BUSINESS ADVISERS

To develop the program, Columbus State asked the companies to serve
as advisers. Experts from the industry ensured that the students' curricula met the companies' needs and planned ahead so that students were
prepared for the technology they would implement in the near term and
long term. The companies also provided a mentor for each student.
"Honda is really fortunate to have in the central Ohio region educational
partners that have the interest in being providers of talent for local manufacturers," McLemore said. "We have a concept that we can put in place
with them based on our technical needs, and they can react very quickly
to implement new training within their educational centers."
Partnerships with community colleges also allow Honda to more
easily reach career centers, high schools and middle schools, he said.
"Creating that line of sight is very important to the sustainability of creating a pipeline in manufacturing. We don't just stop with our community
college partners. We're trying to create that full continuum of a pipeline
of talent." n

MOBILE LABS

Three career centers in the Marysville region have
mobile labs to promote manufacturing careers to
students and to train current workers, said Eric Phillips,
director of the Union County-Marysville Economic
Development group. For example, a company could
utilize a line for training at the mobile lab rather than
shutting down a line for training at its own facility.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE

Japanese is offered as a language in the Marysville
school district, Phillips said. About 250 students are
enrolled.
The fact that Marysville is home to a Honda plant,
the first U.S. plant from a Japanese automaker,
shows the importance of the Japanese culture in the
community, Phillips said. There are 482 Japanese
companies in Ohio, employing 73,434 people, he said.

RAISING THINKERS

"The school district has taken an approach of
problem-solving from kindergarten to 12th grade,"
Phillips said, making it a priority over memorization.

RECRUITMENT SOLUTIONS

Students can pursue engineering or manufacturing
associate's degrees while also taking college
preparatory courses and later pursuing a bachelor's
degree, said Phillips.
When students were encouraged to attend a twoyear college for a degree in advanced manufacturing,
there was some pushback from parents, Spain
said. Columbus State explained that the advanced
manufacturing working environment is safe. Plus,
graduates leave college debt-free and start jobs with
annual salaries of $55,000 to $60,000.
