These trends present a huge challenge to existing transport
networks and plans in the short term. With traffic levels
already rising again, governments and transport authorities
could see a reversal of decades of steady progress
sustainable mobility, leading to gridlocked streets, failing
public transport networks and even worse emissions.
If private cars are preferred over the long term, transport
planners and city authorities face hurdles in reducing
congestion and pollution if public transit is the main focus
of their strategies, especially as safety concerns trump
environmental concerns among participants in our survey.
City authorities can also explore greater possibilities in the
nascent micromobility sector, as these options are quick
and cheap to roll out, require minimal infrastructure and
are highly sustainable - while still providing the degree of
isolation desired amid the current crisis. But this is also a
tremendous opportunity to reimagine and reinvent local
environments, and some cities and local neighborhoods are
moving forward with bigger ideas.
measure during the pandemic. And Copenhagen is thinking
even bigger: an entire economy planned around biomass,
wind and geothermal power that intends to be zero carbon
by 2025, with 35,000 jobs created in the process. In the
US market, household and social travel is down -36% - an
alarming trend if that continues into the next quarter.
It's too early to know whether mobility is entering a new
phase or returning to " normal " - but acknowledging
the challenges of the present without losing sight of the
possibilities of the future is the delicate balance that
companies and city planners must confront. We are also
exploring the COVID-19 impact on Mobility linked with
Healthy Buildings and the desire for consumers to have that
information as they plan the return to work and mobility.
To learn more about that balance and what consumers are
saying, explore the full first report of the Mobility Consumer
Index ey.com/mobilityconsumerindex2020.
For instance, new " low-traffic neighborhoods " in some
London boroughs will allow only pedestrians and cyclists
onto some residential streets that drivers would frequently
have used as shortcuts. Paris has permanently added
650km of bike lanes originally created as an emergency
