Buyers guide | Cars T he 2010 North American International Auto Show is probably the best place to take in the new vehicles already in or coming to showrooms this year. But it can also be overwhelming. So here’s a guide to some must-see cars and trucks, profiled by AutoWeek. For more detail, go to www.autoweek.com. Audi A5/S5 Cabriolet Highlights: The convertible versions of the A5/S5 debut to replace the A4/S4 cabriolet and avoid a trendy folding hardtop in favor of a lighter cloth acoustic roof that takes just 15 seconds to retract. Three engine options include a 2.0-liter, 211-hp, turbocharged I4 with standard FWD and available AWD; a 3.2-liter, 265-hp V6; and a 3.0-liter, 354-hp supercharged V6 in the S5. Available on the S5 is a Quattro Sport rear differential that varies torque between the rear wheels for enhanced performance. Base Price: $42,825 Buick LaCrosse Highlights: The 2010 LaCrosse marks the first Buick sedan to offer AWD. Three trim levels are available, with the choice of a 3.0-liter, 255-hp V6 and a 3.6-liter, 280-hp V6, each bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission. The interior features ice-blue ambient lighting and premium cloth or leather heated seats. Options include a head-up display, navigation, rearview camera, adaptive xenon headlights, blind-spot alert system, rear power-window sunshade and DVD entertainment package with seatback-mounted screens. Base Price: $27,835 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon Highlights: Cadillac expands its popular CTS’ reach with the addition of the sport wagon. The extra dimensions most noticeably increase interior storage behind the rear seats to 25.0 cubic feet, just 4.2 cubic feet shy of the room in the new SRX crossover. Features include a power liftgate, adjustable in-floor storage areas, available 40-gigabyte hard drive, navigation and panoramic rear sunroof. Powertrain options carry over from the sedan, with a 3.0-liter, 270-hp V6 and a 3.6-liter, 304-hp V6. The V-series engine doesn’t make the jump, for now. Base Price: $40,655 Chevrolet Camaro Highlights: After an eight-year hiatus, the Camaro returns to the pony-car wars. Power comes from a 3.6-liter, 304-hp V6 for LS and LT models, while a 6.2-liter, 422-hp V8 moves the SS. Both engines are mated to six-speed manual or optional automatic gearboxes. Major styling cues from the concept remain, including the bulk of the exterior design and the interior’s deep, recessed gauges. A console gauge package is another heritage nod that’s standard on 2LT and 2SS models and optional on the rest of the lineup. An available ambient-light package with LED pipe technology illuminates the cabin, while a driver-convenience package adds remote start (automatic models only) and an iPod interface. A shortthrow Hurst shifter also is available. Base Price: $23,530 Ferrari 458 Italia Highlights: Ferrari’s F430 successor debuts in the form of the 458. A new 4.5-liter, 562-hp V8 paired with a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission provides power for a claimed top speed of 202 mph. The design comes courtesy of Pininfarina, with a key aero specialist from Ferrari’s Formula One team assisting in refining the body’s aerodynamic properties. F1 champion Michael Schumacher helped dial in the chassis and provided input for the interior’s design. Base Price: $220,000 (est.) 2010 North American International Auto Show http://www.autoweek.com
