Unveilings T he North American International Auto Show traditionally is the place where automakers unveil their new production and concept vehicles. Here is a sampling of the products to have their debut on the show floor of Cobo Center this year. 2011 Audi A8 Audi’s new flagship sedan made its world auto show debut sporting larger dimensions, more power and new luxury interior touches. A 4.2-liter, 372-hp V8 mated to a new eight-speed automatic powers the car. To sharpen handling, a variable-bias rear differential is offered. The new interior features a center console touchpad to allow drivers to enter information into the navigation system by writing letters or numbers with a finger stroke. The new A8 goes on sale late this year. BMW Concept ActiveE BMW foreshadowed the production version of its plug-in electric 1-series with the Concept ActiveE. A brushless motor rated at 170 hp draws energy from two lithium-ion batteries to provide propulsion. BMW claims 0 to 37 mph happens in 4.5 seconds and 0 to 62 mph in less than nine seconds. Top speed is 90 mph with a claimed real-world range of 100 miles per charge. A generator to capture kinetic energy, low-drag wheels and low-roll-resistant tires further improve efficiency. 2011 BMW 740i/740Li A more fuel-efficient, six-cylinder 7-series returns to North America powered by an up-rated version of the engine found in the 135i, 335i and 535i. The new 740i’s twin-turbocharged I6 produces 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. A longwheelbase 740Li also will be available. Like its more powerful 750i and 760i siblings, the 740i will be available with a full line of optional equipment including M Sport, luxury seating and BMW individual composition packages. Sales begin in the spring as a 2011 model. 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is There may be no plans for an M version of the new Z4, but BMW still will bring us a higher-performance version. The Z4 sDrive35is features increased boost for the twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and a freer-flowing air intake to produce 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. An over-boost function raises torque further, to 369 lb-ft, for short periods. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an M-Sport adaptive suspension are also added. Sales start in spring. 2010 North American International Auto Show
