GOTHAM GIGS Making her wardrobe work In some cases, she offers individual readers style tips via Twitter Social-media marketing guru and fashion blogger Rachel Yeomans hated shopping trips to T.J. Maxx when she was growing up in Ripon, Wis. But helping her mother sort through her extensive wardrobe to pack for business trips was a treasured task that opened the door to the stylish double life she now leads. ¶ In 2009, Ms. Yeomans created The Working Wardrobe—a blog about workplace style—with coaching from Andrew Swindler, a good friend and the chief executive of Astek Consulting. Last year, Mr. Swindler asked Ms. Yeomans, 29, to head up social-media marketing at the firm. ¶ “Some of my best ideas for Working Wardrobe come while I’m working at Astek,” Ms. Yeomans said, “and my knowledge base for Astek comes from my blog experience.” ¶ At Astek, Ms. Yeomans helps clients envision their overall social-media strategies, including internal policies, so that their practices are consistent A blog that dresses women for success garners hits—and cash throughout the company. ¶ In 2010, ForbesWoman ranked The Working Wardrobe No. 4 in its list of 20 best fashion blogs for professional women. The site gets more than 80,000 unique visits per month, and sponsored stories and advertising spots for its weekly podcast are beginning to generate revenue. The site’s most recent addition is an annual print magazine, which was funded via Kickstarter and a contribution from Mr. Swindler. ¶ Ms. Yeomans attributes the success of her blog to her readers’ strong interest in learning how to put together a collection of outfits and her accessibility via social media. In some cases, she advises individual readers on the fly via Twitter. ¶ Meanwhile, Ms. Yeomans, who moved to New York from Chicago in January, has tackled an even greater challenge: squeezing her own wardrobe into her closet in her Astoria, Queens, apartment. —mary shell buck ennis See EXECUTIVE MOVES on Page 10 8 | Crain’s New York Business | June 25, 2012
