HELLUVA TOWN INSIDE PAGE 34 Ed Burns gets Hooked Ed Burns is known for his role in Saving Private Ryan. But lately, the actor-director has been finding time for a different kind of role: pitchman for InsideHook, a daily lifestyle email aimed at New York guys over 35—think Thrillist or UrbanDaddy, minus the pub crawls. He joined the startup as a partner and contributor in May. Recently, Mr. Burns dished about his entrée into the business. “We met for lunch,” Mr. Burns said of the InsideHook team, which includes co-founder Andy Russell, who was a lead investor in Daily Candy, the email for young women, and a former partner in Bob Pittman’s private-equity firm, Pilot Group. “They told me the idea, and immediately I said, ‘That’s something I would love to have in my life.’ ” InsideHook is the first venture from Trigger Media, an investment fund that Mr. Russell launched in September with $22 million in backing from Mr. Pittman and others. “Most of [our subscribers] are dads, so my main focus was, let’s not have this thing just be about the cool gadgets and cool bars,” said Mr. Burns, whose suggestions for outings have included a romantic getaway upstate and a men’s spa modeled after ancient baths. As for other projects, the filmmaker has a follow-up to his early hit The Brothers McMullen, called The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, coming to theaters in the fall. —matthew flamm Source Lunch A new stage for Donna Hanover Out and About Downtown Dance Festival PAGE 35 Earliest adopters Even 4-year-olds tote iPads as gadget fever ages down newscom Fundraising gold New York City may not be hosting the Olympics, but a local sporting competition among finance types raised an Olympian amount of money for charity. Just a few days after the London opening ceremonies were broadcast on NBC, 116 Wall Streeters took part in the RBC Decathlon here. The bankers spent the day at Columbia University’s Wien Stadium, competing in events including the 400-meter dash, a football throw, rowing and the 800-meter run. The event raised nearly $1.25 million for Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center. Former finance executives Dave Maloney and Marc Hodulich started the decathalon in 2008 as a friendly competition. This year, RBC Capital Markets became the lead sponsor. “The [event] is a great test of who on Wall Street likes to lose the least,” said Bobby Grubert, head of U.S. Equities at RBC Capital Markets and the bank’s decathlon team captain. “But we’re all on the same team here in trying to raise money for kids with cancer.” —miriam kreinin souccar TECHIE TOT: Fouryear-old Everett Gabel got an iPad from his father, a public relations executive, a year ago. buck ennis E BY MIRIAM KREININ SOUCCAR IN THE KNOW Percentage of U.S. children ages 3 to 8 who own these tech devices ight months ago, Dina Forgione bought an iPad for her sons, ages 3 and 5. But they fought so much over who got to use the device that the family sprang for another. ¶ Now the boys use their new electronic toys for everything from learning how to make scrambled eggs to downloading movies from Netflix. They eavesdrop on their mother to learn her iTunes password so they can buy apps. One day the 5-year-old loaded up Ms. Forgione’s Amazon.com shopping cart with $5,000 worth of Transformers toys. Luckily, he couldn’t access her credit card. ¶ Yet despite these shenanigans, Ms. Forgione—a sixth-grade English teacher who says most of the kids in her class own Kindles—says the tablets have been a great influence on her children. ¶ “I’m not into kids staring at a screen, but there are so many educational apps there,” said Ms. Forgione, who lives in Island Park, L.I. “This is the way we live now.” ¶ While many grown-ups are still hemming and hawing over whether to splurge on the latest iPad for themselves, or ditch their antiquated cellphone for the iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy S3, these devices are becoming common accessories for a growing number of tots. Many parents admit they were uncomfortable buying their kids fancy devices at See EARLIEST on Page 34 24% 20% iPad iPod touch Source: Kids Industries August 6, 2012 | Crain’s New York Business | 33 http://www.Amazon.com
