Where in the world is tourism executive Olga Luz Tirado? South of France Rio de Janeiro Napa Valley The Bronx NEWSPAPER Marketing push in works to trade boro’s crime-addled rep for golf, salsa vibe. You got a problem with that? BY LISA FICKENSCHER Tourists planning trips to New York City rarely put the Bronx at the top of their lists of places to visit—and no wonder. The borough has no full-service hotels and just a handful of budget motels. The big tour-bus operators bypass the Bronx. Major publications rarely include its cultural institutions in their listings. Its biggest problem: lingering perceptions that the Bronx is unsafe. Only 10% of the record 51 million visitors who came to the Big Apple last year ventured to the Bronx, according to NYC & Company, the city’s tourism bureau. That 5.1 million represents a gain of 8.3% since 2007, but the increase is less robust than the citywide growth of 10.9%. In addition, the vast majority of the visitors went to the borough’s three most popular attractions: Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. And that’s too bad. Because the Bronx boasts an abundance of unique attractions, including 7,000 acres of bucolic parkland; more than 40 museums, theaters and galleries; and its own Little Italy, otherwise known as Arthur Avenue. What’s more, crime rates have fallen dramatically, according to Police Department data. So why don’t more people visit? “We are dealing with movies that make us look menacing and newspaper articles that talk about marauding dogs and rough streets,” said Marlene Cintron, president of the Bronx Overall Economic Development See BRONX on Page 19 FAIRWAY’S IPO Competitors are checking out famed grocer’s plans to reap millions P. 3 HOT DIGGITY Nathan’s stock price up 50% P. 4 IMMOBILE APP Hail a taxi by smartphone?
