HELLUVA TOWN INSIDE Geraldo: The voice of reason? Geraldo Rivera, who has survived any number of gaffes in his four decades as a television broadcaster, is going out on another limb: Geraldo, his radio show that broadcasts from WABC-AM, will go national across 54 stations in the Cumulus Media network starting Aug. 13. He’s knocking Glenn Beck off about a dozen of those stations, and is providing a middle-of-theroad alternative to the likes of fire-breathing conservatives Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, all as part of Cumulus’ gamble on kinder, gentler talk radio. “I’m not a right-winger, I’m not a left-winger, I’m in the militant middle,” Mr. Rivera said in an interview last week. “The whole risk [for my radio show] is whether people will listen to a host they don’t always agree with.” Cumulus, which is airing Geraldo from 10 a.m. to noon in New York, believes that’s what the public wants now. “When you look at the audience for these more aggressive, more vitriolic [hosts], those shows have started to show erosion,” said Cumulus Senior Vice President Dennis Green. “We think there’s a changing of the guard.” —matthew flamm Source Lunch Ricky’s new CEO has the right makeup PAGE 22 Out and About Celebrating Charlie Parker’s legacy PAGE 23 FLIGHT PLAN: Ross Adam Cole, of BAM Architecture Studio, uses his Mooney Turbo aircraft for corporate trips. Junior’s heads to Japan Japan will get a bigger slice of the Big Apple when Junior’s opens a deli and bakery there in October. Known for its New York-style cheesecakes and overstuffed sandwiches, Junior’s inked a licensing deal with Sakai Foods Inc., which has been distributing Junior’s baked goods in Japan for the past year. Junior’s will also open a commissary to make brisket, stuffed cabbage, corned beef, pastrami and other quintessential deli meats that will be sold in the Tokyo-based eatery. The bakery will debut in the Hankyu department store in Osaka. The cheesecakes are made in New York and shipped frozen. “This gives us a beachhead in Japan and gets people interested in our brand,” said Alan Rosen, whose family has owned the business for 60 years. “The goal is to add more stores and then a big restaurant in Tokyo.” In New York, Junior’s has three full-service restaurants/bakeries— including its flagship on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn—as well as two stand-alone bakeries in Grand Central Terminal and a restaurant at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Connecticut. Its cakes are also sold in the United Kingdom and other European markets through a distributor. —lisa fickenscher juniors I BY HILARY POTKEWITZ t sounds like the beginning of a 12-step program. “At times, I’ve gone for a month or so without it, but that makes me frustrated,” said A., the chair of an important practice group at a major law firm. ¶ “I start to feel itchy if I can’t do it. My wife says I need to get it out of my system,” said P., a senior corporate fraud investigator. ¶ “Most of us are just looking for an excuse to do it,” said R., founding principal of an architecture firm. ¶ But these men aren’t wrestling with an inner demon— they just love to fly. In their own airplanes. ¶ For a certain subset of executives, particularly detail-oriented, overachieving types, becoming a pilot was a childhood dream. But that youthful hankering turned into a full-blown obsession, and despite the exorbitant costs—a single-engine Cessna can cost several hundred thousand dollars, fuel can run up to $8 per gallon, and housing an aircraft at a local airport can cost upwards of $280 per month—many choose to fly their own planes, justifying the expense in myriad ways. Often, they fly for a good cause. ¶ Ross Adam Cole, principal of SoHo-based BAM Architecture Studio, first got his Mooney Turbo aircraft for pure pleasure, but flying quickly became a business necessity.
