His year-old startup is ringing up sales. Investors include Josh Kushner and Mark Suster, as well as venture capital firms Khosla Ventures, Raptor Ventures and General Catalyst. ¶ With a staff of six, Manhattan-based Neverware has already installed its server, dubbed Juicebox, in one school in the Bronx and two in New Jersey, and it has contracts for two more schools in Brooklyn. Mr. Hefter is continuing to focus on local expansion. Not bad for a 26-year-old CEO who once dreamed of a career on Wall Street and spent six months during his junior year at the Wharton School working in Hong Kong for a hedge fund. ¶ “Trading equities is like being a spectator at a horse race,” he said. “I wanted to be the jockey.” ¶ Armed with a B.S. in economics and a longtime fascination with technology, Mr. Hefter started designing a server that can link schools’ computers in the cloud to state-of-the-art software, from basic word-processing and spreadsheet programs to educational diagnostic-testing programs. He decided to focus on the education market because, as he sees it, “education currently has the greatest need for revolutionary technology.” ¶ Mr. Hefter hopes to piggyback on Washington, D.C.’s Race to the Top program, a $4 billion initiative under which the government invites states to compete for grants to help turn around struggling schools. One of the four areas stressed by the U.S. Department of Education is “improving the collection and use of data,” something Juicebox can do. Down the road, Mr. Hefter hopes to expand Juicebox to hospitals and other large enterprises. —esthena brutten Jump-starting computers he founded.
