NEWS THEY COULD USE: Hillary Frey is hoping Yahoo’s huge audience will help its stories make a splash. buck ennis GOTHAM GIGS Yahoo News chief tries to make site relevant—again A political reporting team includes its first White House journalist Yahoo News has the biggest news audience online, averaging 81 million unique visitors a month, according to comScore. But it’s not considered a major news destination. Hillary Frey has been trying to change that perception. ¶ Named editor in chief of Yahoo News in July, Ms. Frey is working with the site’s journalists, as well as partners like ABC News, to expand coverage, step up original reporting and give the site a more distinct identity. ¶ In a case of curious timing, the parent company has a similar goal. Ms. Frey’s promotion—she was hired as managing editor in November—came the day after Yahoo Inc. named Google veteran Marissa Mayer as chief executive. Ms. Mayer will be figuring out Yahoo’s growth strategy. Ms. Frey’s concerns are a bit more immediate, as she manages a political reporting team that includes Yahoo’s first White House correspondent, Olivier Knox, and develops programs to highlight the site’s presidential campaign coverage. ¶ “For years, people came to Yahoo News and they would find a lot of wire content,” Ms. Frey said. “We wanted to put a stake in the ground with our own talent and have people see the site as more than an aggregator.” ¶ It’s working, she said. “We went from barely being mentioned in the press to being out there in the conversation: ‘[Political reporter] Chris Moody reported this, Olivier Knox reported this.’ ” ¶ A mother of a baby girl, Ms. Frey, who is married to GQ Editor Mark Lotto, has held editing jobs at Politico, The New York Observer and Adweek. She believes that Yahoo’s access to a large audience gives it a news-gathering edge. Reporters can take the national temperature simply by questioning readers. “We have this amazing readership we can go straight to,” Ms. Frey said. “That’s been really exciting.” —matthew flamm Changing the conversation 8 | Crain’s New York Business | August 27, 2012 http://www.FoodandWine.com http://www.TravelandLeisure.com http://www.TravelandLeisure.com
