It’s the David Paterson show
The former guv reinvented himself on radio. But will WOR keep him?
‘I wake up in the morning, everything is not my fault’
David Paterson prefers a dimly lit radio studio in Manhattan’s financial district to the opulent governor’s suite in the state Capitol. The reason is simple. He no longer has to deal with warring politicians, fiscal crises and pesky reporters. “I wake up in the morning, everything is not my fault,” said the state’s first African-American governor. “I feel a lot better about things.” ¶ Following the country’s financial meltdown in late 2008, Albany faced a $21 billion budget deficit. When Mr. Paterson took unpopular steps to close the gap, “liberals and conservatives alike found something they finally agreed with—they couldn’t stand me,” he said. He also had to deal with fallout from a coup that roiled state Senate Democrats, and an investigation into his office’s handling of domestic-abuse allegations against an aide. ¶ These days, Mr. Paterson, 58, makes more money as the afternoon host on WOR
radio and as chairman of Icon Group Compliance Services than the $179,000 he made as governor. As a child, he gravitated to radio after losing much of his sight. “I had a friend who lived down the block from me,” he said. “I would be the host and he would be the guests.” ¶ His program launched in September 2011, but its future is uncertain. WOR’s owners are selling the station to Clear Channel—the nation’s largest station owner. ¶ The former governor’s fallback position is growing his construction consulting business, launched in August with friend Brian Aryai. ¶ Mr. Paterson employed a driver until he became an unpaid MTA board member. Now commuters are shocked to see him on the subway. “I’ve gotten on the train and had to line passengers up so that they could take pictures with me,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
