Yet one corner of deeply Democratic New York City is a moderate bastion that could just as well be Middle America. “Staten Island really is like the Ohio of New York,” remarked Michael Arvanites, president of the borough’s North Shore Democratic Club. “There’s a real buzz about it.” Polls of the borough show a dead heat between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Staten Island also features several competitive state legislative races, not to mention the city’s tightest congressional contest, between freshman Republican Rep. Michael Grimm and Democrat Mark Murphy. Notably, the Democratic Party has assigned a “50” rating to the borough’s House district (which includes a bit of Brooklyn)—exactly halfway between red and blue on a 100-point scale. See STATEN ISLAND on Page 25 It’s literally the most evenly divided district in the country. http://WWW.CRAINSNEWYORK.COM
