Greentarget: Steven J. DiMattia, 40, GOTHAM GIGS Dining interrupted ‘It was as if I was at the shore, watching the water recede and come back’ The night Superstorm Sandy hit New York, Peter Poulakakos darted in and out of his seven restaurants on Stone Street in lower Manhattan, checking on the sump pumps and the rising sewer water that was seeping into their basements. ¶ He ended up spending the night in his third-floor office at 93 Pearl St., watching cars float by and observing the strange tidal patterns on the street. “It was as if I was at the shore, watching the water recede and come back,” said the restaurateur, whose downtown roots reach back to the legendary Harry’s, which his father opened four decades ago. But it was his livelihood that was going out to sea. ¶ The next morning, nearly a third of his 250 downtown employees went in to scrub down and disinfect the damaged eateries—he owns 13 restaurants in the area and another nine in midtown. They were so efficient that as soon as electricity was restored Power is back, but customers still scarce downtown to most of Manhattan, three of his businesses— Ulysses, Vintry Wine & Whiskey and Growler Bites & Brews—were ready to serve drinks. But only about 10 local residents showed up. ¶ While Mr. Poulakakos tallies his losses, including destroyed equipment and more than $30,000 worth of spoiled food, another worry is weighing on him. ¶ “My No. 1 concern,” he said, “is about the companies that have had to go elsewhere temporarily. I just hope they come back and stay committed to lower Manhattan.” ¶ He estimates that 90% of his customers have yet to return to his popular restaurants. Some may not even know they are open because the telephone lines have been knocked out. It’s a bad start to the holiday season. ¶ “At this time of year,” he said, “we get calls every day about parties, and that’s not happening now.” —lisa fickenscher 8 | Crain’s New York Business | November 12, 2012 buck ennis http://www.Aptsandlofts.com
