I’ve lived it’ Shane McMahon grew up in the family entertainment business. At 6, he began working as a ring boy. Later, he stepped over the ropes and into the World Wrestling Federation as a referee. Eventually, he became a wrestler whose shifting allegiances and fancy footwork provided the plotlines that helped take the company now known as WWE global. ¶ But in 2010, Mr. McMahon, 43, ditched his signature “Shane O Mac” baseball jersey to become CEO of You On Demand, a cable platform with offices in Union Square and Beijing. ¶ “It’s the same business,” Mr. McMahon said. “It’s marketing. It’s promotion.” ¶ His major role with the WWE was actually on the business side, working with his father, Vince, to spread wrestling’s pay-perview offerings. This month, his new company launched the first nationwide video-on-demand platform in China, offering buy-at-home movies 8 | Crain’s New York Business | February 18, 2013 to a country that purchases $6 billion annually in pirated DVDs. Mr. McMahon has already signed agreements for 18.2 million homes in China and hopes to expand to 30 million by year’s end. ¶ “The demographics, the demand, the relationships were all in the right place,” Mr. McMahon said. “That’s what made me leave: the gold ticket.” ¶ The company has distribution agreements with the Chinese government, cable providers and Hollywood studios and plans to offer a kids channel. ¶ Mr. McMahon’s mother, Linda, twice lost races for U.S. Senate in Connecticut, but Mr. McMahon has no interest in politics. ¶ He still asks his famous father for advice. “I’m no fool,” the younger McMahon said. “The man is one of the greatest promoters of all time, in my view. And that’s why I understand this business and why it’s going to —chris bragg succeed: I’ve lived it.” Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Linda Tantawi, 49, joined the nonprofit as chief executive. She was previously executive director at the CJ Foundation for SIDS. Kroll Advisory Solutions: Garth Williams, 44, joined the media company as chief financial officer. He was previously vice president and controller at American Tower Corp. Magisto: Reid Genauer, 40, joined the mobile movie creation and sharing company as chief marketing officer. He was previously vice president and head of marketing at Bitbop, Fox Mobile Group. Liazon Corp.: David Finkel, 49, joined the insurance company as chief operating officer. He was previously chief operating officer at Inovalon. Aereo Inc.: Alex Moulle-Berteaux, 41, joined the online television technology platform as chief commercial officer. He was previously global head of marketing and public relations for Rockstar Games. Ruckus Marketing: Daniel Millman, 29, was promoted to chief relationship officer, a newly created position. He was previously director of business development. Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State: David Seay, 61, was promoted to chief legal officer and executive vice president. He was previously general counsel. Stribling & Associates: Charles Russell Jr., 49, joined the real estate firm as executive vice president and director of marketing and new business development. He was previously vice president at Douglas Elliman Developments. Sills Cummis & Gross: Steven Rothman, 60, joined the law firm as a member. He was previously a U.S. congressman in New Jersey’s Ninth Congressional District. Little, Brown and Co.: Reagan Arthur, 48, was promoted to senior vice president and publisher of the media company, effective April 1. She was previously editorial director of Reagan Arthur Books, a Little, Brown imprint. Penton Media Inc.: Joe Territo, 44, joined as senior vice president, content and user engagement, a newly created position. He was previously executive director, content, at Advance Digital. Amalgamated Bank: John A. Romano, 56, joined as executive vice president of operations. He was previously chief operating officer and president of People’s United Bank’s Long Island division.
