She had, however, spent 10 years as a digital executive at insurance giant Metropolitan Life, the last five of them running its sales portals, and was assistant vice president of e-business when she left in 2009. ¶ “I’ve been able to watch what worked, what didn’t, what was overhyped,” Ms. Goodstein said. “And I’m able to talk to customers about making the right choices [for their business], not doing something just because it’s digital.” ¶ The company—and the downtown businesses that support it—took a hit following Superstorm Sandy; what’s now called NYC Community Media took refuge in the MetroTech building in Brooklyn and didn’t return to its 8 | Crain’s New York Business | March 4, 2013 Canal Street headquarters until mid-December. But Ms. Goodstein says both print and digital advertising revenue are up this year over last, and circulation is stable. ¶ The company recently relaunched the website of Chelsea Now and is looking at increasing the frequency of Gay City News and Downtown Express to weekly from twice monthly. She also wants to connect with “newer folks” moving into areas that the papers target, and cover lower Manhattan neighborhoods that the company has never focused on, like Chinatown. ¶ Ms. Goodstein, 47, is married to longtime newspaper executive Les Goodstein, a senior vice president at News Corp. That connection has also helped her navigate this new world—up to a point. ¶ “If I have to bounce something off him, it’s great,” she said. But, she added, “it’s my decision and my company.” —matthew flamm Martini Media Inc.: Tom O’Regan, 38, was promoted to president of the advertising and marketing agency.
