GOTHAM GIGS When hospitals are victims NY-Presby safety chief preps for the next disasterre Sandy ‘changed the future of hospital emergency planning’ Jeffrey Bokser is a guy prepared for anything. When Superstorm Sandy bore down on Manhattan, he listened to the news about hospital evacuations. “What comes next?” he thought. “How will we be here for our patients— and the city?” ¶ Mr. Bokser, vice president for safety, security and emergency services at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, created a safe haven as Sandy raged. The designated incident commander during the storm, he led an 88employee team charged with protecting the hospital’s operations, facilities, patients and staff, and overseeing housing, transportation, food and gasoline for thousands of the hospital’s 19,000 employees who worked or stayed on site at the hospital. “My role is to prepare the organization for any emergency,” said Mr. Bokser, 35. “No matter what it might be.” ¶ But Sandy redefined that role. The storm “changed the future of 6 | Crain’s New York Business | March 11, 2013 hospital emergency preparedness,” said Mr. Bokser. Hospitals are considered “beacons in the night” during a disaster, but Sandy showed “what happens when hospitals become the victims.” ¶ “We have to factor that in for the future,” he said. ¶ Mr. Bokser’s appreciation for safety was born of tragedy. As a teenager, he watched his best friend die in a car crash. The accident “set in motion my desire to make a difference in other’s lives,” he said. ¶ Mr. Bokser’s suburban New Jersey home is stocked with emergency kits, a generator and food supplies, and his kids are prepped for emergencies. “I can’t be fully committed to my job unless I know my family is safe,” he says. One tip: have some cash on hand, as ATM and creditcard machines don’t function without power. Preparedness is everything. ¶ “I love what I do,” said Mr. Bokser. “I’m amazed at my career path.” —barbara benson Legal Marketing Association: Maziel Abrego, 37, was appointed president of the nonprofit’s New York chapter.
