ERADICATING MALARIA, ONE NET AT A TIME
“IT’S 9 P.M.—do you know if your children are sleeping under their net?” That was the question posed via text message to 6 million
Senegalese as part of a massive health education campaign by Manhattan-based Malaria No More. Martin Edlund, 37, its new
chief executive, partnered with ExxonMobil, News Corp. and American Idol to spread public awareness and raise funds for the
prevention and treatment of the disease, eradicated in the U.S. in 1951, and the third-biggest killer of children under 5 in
Africa.
“Martin has a set of skills and experiences that made him uniquely qualified to take leadership,” said Scott Case,
former chief executive and current vice chairman for Malaria No More.
Mr. Edlund, former new programs director and chief marketing officer for the nonprofit, got Ashton Kutcher to
donate 10,000 mosquito nets after he beat CNN to be the first Twitter account with 1 million followers. That was
matched by Oprah, P Diddy and Anderson Cooper. Ultimately the group distributed more than 100,000 nets. “It
was one of the first times that a social-media humanitarian campaign yielded such tangible results,” Mr. Edlund said.
Antimalaria organizations Malaria No More, the Global Fund, the Gates Foundation and others have seen a

1,000% increase in funding in the past decade, to more than $2 billion.
