A SHOULDER TO

In the high-stakes world of medical school,
students sometimes need a shoulder to cry on—
when a professor yells at them, or they botch an
exam, or, sadly, a patient dies. ¶ At Weill Cornell
Medical College, that shoulder belongs to Caryn
Davi, whose job title, clinical curriculum
coordinator, belies her true function: politician,
diplomat, mother hen and problem fixer. ¶
“There’s someone crying in the office—it can be
over anything—at least two times a week,” said
Ms. Davi. ¶ Most faculty interact with students
for just a year. Ms. Davi, a social worker by
training, guides and nudges students through four
grueling years and beyond. It’s her job every year
to match some 400 medical students with
physician preceptors and schedule them into
classes, clinics and hospitals in five boroughs—a
cross between preparing Marines for battle and
old-fashioned matchmaking. ¶ “She so gets
people,” said Dr. Shari Midoneck, associate dean
of academic affairs. “She can size up people in a
tremendously efficient and astute way.” ¶ When
students grouse that preceptors don’t let them
interview patients, it’s Ms. Davi who makes the
phone call or sends an email to the mentoring
doctors. When she noticed that a student was
missing classes, Ms. Davi was the one who
discovered, discreetly, that in addition to her
heavy course load, the student was taking care of
her seriously ill father. Ms. Davi made sure the
student’s schedule was rearranged, and that she
got help for her father. ¶ Two years ago, students
performed a satirical musical about the retirement
of a longtime dean, choosing Ms. Davi to replace
him. Another year, students dedicated the
yearbook to her, writing: “Caryn knows when you
get a haircut.” ¶ It’s true, Ms. Davi said: “It’s my
job to know.”
