Beset by scandals and with jobs and bonuses shrinking, the legendary Street has lost some of its glamour. Many students these days want jobs that are more stable and predictable, if less remunerative. Or, like Ms. Connor, they want to work in hot industries, such as media and luxury goods. MOOCs fit with Columbia’s “mission to educate the world,” said Sree Sreenivasan, Columbia’s first chief digital officer. While other New York City colleges weigh whether to join the fray, Columbia is wading into the latest frontier in online teaching. The university’s experiment with MOOCs is part of a broader online strategy. Columbia already offers 14 master’s degrees that a student could theoretically earn “without ever setting foot on campus,” Mr. Sreenivasan said. But this year at Columbia University Business School, the retail and luxury-goods student club has a hefty roster of 200 members, and the number of grads entering the industry doubled between 2011 and 2012 to 3.6% of the class. “Even though [students] come [to Columbia] interested in Wall Street, they have their eyes and ears open,” said club President Cristina Connor, who is interning with a global luxurygoods company and will work there after she graduates in May. “There’s an openness to other opportunities.” Ms. Connor is one of a growing cohort of business students and newly minted M.B.A.s who are shunning MORE ENTERTAINING 11% PORTION of NYU M.B.A. grads who went into media and entertainment jobs in 2012 5% PORTION who went into media and entertainment jobs in 2011 April 29, 2013 | Crain’s New York Business | 13
