GOTHAM GIGS Artist follows in family’s path Alex Kalman chooses the medium of his time: digital ‘There’s a difference between sharing a clip and sharing a story’ Alex Kalman, 28, is a second-generation downtown visual artist who chose his medium at an early age and hasn’t looked back. ¶ His mother is the well-known Israeli-born illustrator Maira Kalman, whose drawings often appear on the cover of The New Yorker. His late father, Tibor Kalman, was a famous graphic designer who challenged social norms. ¶ Mr. Kalman leaned toward the medium of his time, digital video, making movies in high school, and co-founding Red Bucket Films with two friends while at Bard College. The company has since sent The Pleasure of Being Robbed and Daddy Longlegs to the Cannes and Sundance film festivals and created video campaigns for Kate Spade and Nike. ¶ This month, Mr. Kalman, who works out of a studio at 368 Broadway, where writer-actresses Greta Gerwig and Lena Dunham used to rent space, plans to debut a free video-editing app called Camra, which allows users to organize shots, make voice-overs and easily edit a one-minute movie on the go. ¶ “There’s a difference between sharing a clip of a moment and sharing a story,” Mr. Kalman said, distinguishing the app from competitors Vine, which loops video, and Instagram’s new short-videos feature. Still, the app will also be a social-media sharing site, with users’ feeds updated with videos from followers. “We really value stories,” he said. “We want to give enough air to the stories so they can breathe and you can consume them. Our focus is to [have viewers] actually fall into a moment.” ¶ Mr. Kalman, who also founded an art space called the mmuseumm last year, said the app is already stocked with short films. One video, for instance, features an older, male barista who also works in a photo studio and is often included in fashion shoots with famous models. —annie karni Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: Martha Vietor Glass, 59, was appointed president of the nonprofit.
