John Hatfield, executive director of Socrates
Sculpture Park, chatted at a picnic table on a
recent sunny day, comparing his role at the
outdoor museum to that of a good dinner-party
host. His job, he said, is to make sure that
everyone involved with the institution feels at
home when they come to the 4.7-acre waterfront
park in Long Island City, Queens. As a former
professional sculptor, he has a special affinity for
the artists who show their work there. ¶ “I
understand their anxieties and desires,” said Mr.
Hatfield, whose affable demeanor belies his roots
in the clan that famously feuded with the
McCoys. ¶ Mr. Hatfield moved the wall-less
studio where the park’s 15 annual fellows work
from May through August to a more central
location to give a view into the creative process.
Visitors can also partake of yoga classes, art
lessons and foreign-film screenings on the city-

owned land that was once an illegal dump. ¶ “It
makes art more transparent,” said Mr. Hatfield,
who lives with his wife and teenage son in
TriBeCa. ¶ Mr. Hatfield joined the park in
January 2012 after spending 17 years at the New
Museum, where he’d risen to deputy director and
learned how to regularly put on shows of cuttingedge artists. “It’s about constantly reinventing,”
said Mr. Hatfield, who still sculpts but no longer
shows his work. ¶ Mr. Hatfield, whose budget is
$950,000, is proud to be giving an exhibit called
“Do It” its New York City—and outdoor—
debut. The show features instructions by artists
on how to create something and how other artists
interpret the directions. In one piece, Chinese
dissident Ai Weiwei explains how to make a tool
that can spray paint over the lens of a surveillance
camera. ¶ “I want for us to take greater risks,”
