CU Nursing - Summer Commencement 2024 - 5

M
AYA SCHRAFFENBERGER knows it's never too late to find your dream
career. She started working in the entertainment industry, bounced
around to different jobs, and ended up getting laid off in 2020 during the
pandemic. She needed hip surgery - and when she woke up, she had the desire
to find a rewarding career and realized nursing was that path. She says going
back to school was an adjustment. She leaned on her cohort and faculty for
help, and now she's ready to start her nursing career at OrthoColorado Hospital
in Lakewood. " Have confidence in yourself that you can do it - because you can.
It might seem intimidating if you have a different career or earned
a degree that doesn't have to do with science, none of that
matters if you're passionate about being a nurse, " she says.

knows she's lucky to
be alive. She was in
a coma for five days
and in the ICU for more
than two weeks. The nurses
who took care of her inspired her
to think about becoming a nurse. " I know
firsthand that life is short, and I don't know
if I'm promised tomorrow, " she says. " With
nursing, there's an opportunity to work
anywhere in the world and my goal has
been to go back home to
Hawaii. "

ABOUT SPROAT-LANCASTER.
RENE WADA first learned
about nursing when she was in
elementary school. Her mother
was studying to become a nurse
in Japan, so she was learning
nursing terms at the same time as
her mom. She saw the dedication and
kindness her mother gave to patients,
and it made Wada want to become a nurse,
too. Wada and her family moved to Colorado, but
she knew she wanted to return to Japan for nursing school. The
COVID-19 pandemic changed those plans, so she enrolled in CU
Nursing's UCAN program. Wada hopes to be an inspiration for
Asian nurses and wants to bring her nursing knowledge to Japan
to improve healthcare systems. " I want to have an opportunity to
help others. It's so rewarding to know that I can
make a positive difference in someone's life by
providing care and support, " she says.
