Page 12 wednesday preview ALC Daily Wednesday, September 19, 2012 Essay Contest, Forum Focus on Healthy Changes While the theme of this year’s Annual Legislative Conference focuses on building generations, the younger generation has much to say about how they’re building as well. They’ll get their opportunity as part of the CBC Spouses’ Essay Contest and Issues Forum. This year, essays focus on the theme of “A Healthy Change: How America’s Youth are ‘Moving Us’ to a Healthier Tomorrow.” Students were asked about barriers to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and how they believe schools, families and communities can address these barriers. More than 200 students from around the country participated. The topic also will be the subject of a forum, featuring Jeffrey Mills, Director of Food Service for the D.C. Public Schools; retired NFL player Darryl Haley; retired NBA star Dominique Wilkins; Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Director of Leadership for Healthy Communities; and Chef Cathal Armstrong, founder of Chefs as Parents. Also participating in the forum will be the student writers, who will present the winning essays and receive scholarship awards. The essay contest is open to high school and college students in districts represented by Congressional Black Caucus members. Each year, the CBC Spouses choose a theme that is of vital interest to the communities they represent. Previous topics have included the U.S. justice system, civil rights, and HIV/AIDS. The work is judged by a committee of spouses. The forum will be held from 2-4 pm; Thursday in Room 209C. ALC attendees may still purchase tickets for Wednesday’s Celebration of Leadership in the Fine Arts as well as Saturday’s Prayer Breakfast and Phoenix Awards Dinner in the ticket area of the Walter E.
