The Black Party, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday in the Howard Theatre, is one of ALC’s prime networking events. The awards presentation marks the first time that CBCF has recognized Emerging Leaders, outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to AfricanAmerican and other underserved communities by developing leaders, informing policy and educating the public. The awardees are: • Richard Buery, Jr., president and CEO of the Children’s Aid Society. Named to this position in 2009, Buery is the first black leader and the youngest since Charles Loring Brace founded the agency in 1853. Children’s Aid helps New York City children living in poverty with a network of services. Programs target pre-birth through young adulthood. Prior to joining Children’s Aid, Buery co-founded and served as executive director of Groundwork, Inc., a program serving families in Brooklyn public housing developments. While a student at Harvard, he founded a summer enrichment program for children in Boston. He also founded iMentor, a technology program that pairs New York City middle and high school students with professional mentors. • Nicole Lee, president of TransAfrica, a human rights and social justice advocacy organization that works to promote diversity and equity in the foreign policy arena and justice for the African world. Lee is the organization’s first female president. In her role, she has testified before Congress on issues of aid and food security for the African continent and regularly briefs policymakers on issues of importance to the African world. She frequently is interviewed as an expert on Haiti and the African Disapora. Her opinion articles have been published in numerous magazines and websites, and her weekly column is carried to more than 200 newspapers through the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association wire service. • Dwayne Lawson-Brown, project coordinator of Metro TeenAids, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that works to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS through education and outreach, and to assist those already infected. LawsonBrown works under the program’s Real TalkDC, a social media outreach campaign. He manages a group of nine peer educators who create new media. He also serves as an HIV tester and counselor and event planner. This event is just one of many slated for Emerging Leaders throughout ALC. The Emerging Leaders program aims to connect young professionals with passionate leaders and advocates to address issues facing the global African-American community and Diaspora. Other events include: Instant Apprentice Power Luncheon, 12:30-2 p.m. Thursday, Room 202-AB. Emerging leaders will become “instant apprentices” while having lunch with AfricanAmerican executives and leaders in business, government, education and nonprofit organizations.
