broken new ground in the field of trajectory, switching from a PhD in
chemistry, her undergraduate major, to a medical degree. But while
in medical school, the task to commit numerous facts to memory began to discourage Dr. High, and
she took a year off to do chemistry
research, contemplating whether
to return to medicine. That time
away seemed to be just what the
doctor ordered because upon return everything clicked.
When deciding on a subspecialty
in internal medicine, Dr. High recalled how she had liked the approach to medicine she had learned
while pursuing chemistry, noting
that "Hematology was one of the
few fields that was well understood
at the molecular level." She briefly considered endocrinology and

Two Past ASH Presidents Honored
With 2013 Mentor Award
A
SH places great emphasis
on the training and development of early-career hematologists and each year honors
two exceptional individuals who,
like ASH, value mentorship. This
year's recipients are two highly
regarded individuals who deeply
support the next generation of hematologists.
Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., ASH will
recognize John Adamson, MD, with
the basic science award, and Stanley Schrier, MD, with the clinical
investigation award.
Dr. Adamson is clinical professor
of medicine and associate director
of the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Training Program at the
University of California, San Diego. He has devoted his career to
advancing the understanding of
erythropoiesis and changing the
clinical management of anemia. He
served as the 1996 ASH president
and editor of Blood from 1983 to
1987.
His supportive, but not directive, approach
to
mentorship
is
what
sets
him apart as a
role model and
teacher.
