Getting Up to Date in Hematology
With the Blood Journal
BY BOB LÖWENBERG, MD, PHD,
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, BLOOD, AND NANCY
BERLINER, MD, DEPUTY EDITOR, BLOOD
K
eeping current in the face of
the unprecedented productivity of scientific research
poses a nontrivial challenge for
researchers and clinicians in hematology. Important new knowledge
appears in virtually every corner of
our field, and it has a direct impact
on our understanding of hematologic processes, on our future research agenda, and on the diagnostic and therapeutic management of
our patients with hematologic diseases. Channeling and integrating
the continuous flow of new information is a daily task for scientists
and clinicians as well as students
and trainees. How do we digest
this information? How do we extract the essentials from the bulk
of emerging new data? How do we
keep an overview so that we can
use the information effectively in
our professional lives as hematolo-
gists? One of the primary objectives
of Blood is to support our readers in
this ambitious challenge.
Blood publishes reviews in several
distinct formats, all written by distinguished experts in the field. It offers
Reviews, Perspectives, EvidenceBased Focused Reviews, and Spotlight Reviews, each with their own
unique focus. Perspectives discusses
topics and controversies relevant to
hematology, generally from a personal or opinion-based standpoint.
Spotlight Reviews focus on very recent emerging scientific and clinical
developments in a circumscribed
area and are presented in a concise
format that distills a recent burst of
advances in a particular area.
In 2013, Blood launched a new category of Review Series. Each Series
includes a collection of Reviews that
highlight topics of significant interest in our field related to a particular broad area of research in active
development. Thus, a Review Series
presents a comprehensive total perspective on a selected topic of interest. The Editors of Blood trust that the
Review Series fills a significant need
among our readers in their objective
to stay up-to-date with the evolving
changes in their field. In one issue of
Blood, the readers can find updated
expert coverage of the fast-evolving
field of hematology.

Celebrating Ten Years
of MMSAP
T
onight at 6:30 p.m., ASH invites all interested meeting
attendees to the Promoting
Minorities in Hematology Presentations and Reception, which will
showcase training and research
opportunities geared toward increasing the diversity of scholars in
the field of hematology. One of the
many highlights of the event will
be the scientific presentations from
the 2014 ASH Minority Medical
Student Award Program (MMSAP)
participants. At this year's meeting,
ASH is celebrating 10 years that
this program has been introducing
students to the field through shortterm research projects. This milestone will be spotlighted through-
