communities was a tremendous
success. The session's four talks,
featuring speakers from both scientific disciplines, highlighted promising techniques to alter cell signaling
and gene expression in hemoglobinopathies. These techniques took
decades of relentless work and collaboration between many different research groups. The speakers,
Drs. Ann Dean, Marina Cavazzana,
Harvey Lodish, and Lucia De Franceschi, skillfully represented the research diversity required to bring
these innovative therapies from
bench to bedside, with an emphasis on how the techniques can be
(and already have been) applied in
the clinical setting. "At the beginning, I doubt anyone was confident
these studies would yield anything
beyond fundamental knowledge of
transcription," mused Dr. Minella,
"yet we are now at a point where
these potentially curative methods
can be tested in patients."
The discussed erythrocyte reprogramming techniques included gene
therapy, gene editing, hemoglobin
transcription regulation, and stimulation of erythroid progenitors - all
methods aimed at correcting intrinsic biologic errors in chronic anemias, especially hemoglobinopathies.
By using a patient's endogenous
cells, these therapies have a distinct
advantage over bone marrow transplantation. Session co-chair Dr. Colleen Delaney stated that the session
represented "a major step forward in
the treatment of patients with hemoglobinopathies. Previously, stem cell
transplant was the only known cure,
but transplant carries with it a risk
for treatment-related mortality and
lifelong complications."
Longing to be at the cutting-edge,
but missed this electrifying session?
If so, don't miss the Presidential
Symposium tomorrow at 9:45 a.m.
in Hall AB of the San Diego Convention Center, where these groundbreaking therapies will be discussed
again, specifically in the context of
sickle cell disease.
Dr. Naik indicated no relevant conflicts of interest.
If you can dream it,
they can draw it.
