Networking Reception for Female Hematologists
Brings a Fresh Look at Proactivity

senior colleagues or peers."
In addition to mentorship, the
emphasis of this year's program is
the importance of being proactive.
For Dr. Chomienne, proactivity
means getting out of old patterns
and even one's own personal comfort zone. "Women in hematology
and throughout all industries must
recognize that it is easy to settle
into the spaces that, historically and
culturally, we have been put in, or,
where we've felt are most 'comfortable.'" Dr. Chomienne notes that
by advancing into positions where
critical decisions are being made,
women can identify new opportunities to get proactive, both by
leading and by leveling the playing
field so that everyone has opportunities to share their expertise.
Dr. Burns also observes the importance of proactivity at a higher
level and recognizes the importance
of pushing issues important to female hematologists to the fore, using all of the tools at one's disposal.
"I believe it is our responsibility to
be proactive in providing mentoring and networking opportunities,"
she says. "And I thank ASH for being so supportive of our efforts."
In addition to remarks from the
co-chairs, participants will work in
small groups led by more senior
hematologists, to discuss strategies
to address some real-life challenges that participants will be able to
contribute in advance. Attendees
