Give Trainees a Voice -
Apply for the ASH Trainee Council
T
he ASH Trainee Council,
created in 2001 to provide a
forum for hematology fellows to discuss issues relevant to
fellowship training and career development, consists of 12 trainees
from the United States, Canada,
and Mexico. Ten trainees must be
MDs or MD-PhDs from accredited
hematology or hematology/oncology fellowship training programs
and two trainees must be PhDs selected from hematology post-doctoral training programs. The council advises the ASH Committee on
Training about issues relevant to
the educational needs of hematology trainees and helps develop
programs of interest for trainees,
among other functions.
For an inside look, we interviewed Dr. Leidy L. Isenalumhe,
chair of the ASH Trainee Council
and senior clinical fellow at the H.
Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, FL.
able for trainees need to progress
with the times. The goal continues
to be the expansion of services for
all trainees from medical students
through fellowship and throughout
PhD training. I believe the Trainee
Council exemplifies the commitment ASH has to future hematologists, and this is one of the main
reasons I joined the council - to
continue to bring innovative changes that benefit all trainees.
Leidy L. Isenalumhe, MD, MS
What are the main goals of the
Trainee Council?
Leidy Isenalumhe: The goal of
the Trainee Council is to provide,
in an official capacity, advocacy for
the needs of trainees at all levels of
education. The field of medicine is
never stagnant, so the educational
resources and opportunities avail-
Describe your experience with the
Trainee Council? How has it affected
your career?
LI: My career goal is to treat adolescent and young adult (AYA) individuals with hematologic malignancies. I trained in both pediatric
and adult hematology/oncology,
with a focus on the AYA population. Due to this training path, I felt
I could bring a unique perspective

ASH Congressional Fellowship
T
he goal of the ASH Congressional Fellowship provides
an in-depth education about
the policy-making process, including Congress's relationship with
the hematology community. The
program also provides an opportunity to educate congressional
members and staff about hematology. A hematologist will be chosen
to work in a congressional office on
Capitol Hill for one academic year
to help shape health-care and hematology policy. ASH's first Congressional Fellow, Dr. Catherine
Zander shares her experience on
the Hill below:
What inspired you to apply for the
Congressional Fellowship Program?
Catherine Zander: During my
postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham,
I spent my free time doing patient
outreach and held several postdoctoral fellow advocacy positions. As
time went on, more and more of my
conversations with lab mates, peers,
and physician friends turned political. My researcher friends were concerned with research funding and
feared the future because of National Institutes of Health cuts. Many of
the clinicians were frustrated with
barriers in patient care, from prohibitively expensive medicines to
patients not coming in until their
illness had gotten to a crisis stage
due to insufficient or no insurance.
Similarly, a close friend at Birmingham needed oral chemotherapy.
Although his wife had worked until retirement for an insurance company, in Alabama there are no oral
chemotherapy parity laws, and their
insurance wouldn't cover his treatment. These problems have become
too important to not provoke action. I had been successful in my
advocacy and outreach efforts in my
universities, within the postdoctoral
community, and with patient education, so I thought if I were part of the
conversation within Congress, that
Catherine Zander, PhD
representation would help the community. Also, it seemed like the perfect combination of the things I am
most passionate about.
