Blood Advances Celebrates One
Year of Furthering the Conversation

s we near the one-year anniversary of Blood Advances
we are excited to update the
readers of ASH News Daily on our
progress. After the successful launch
at the 2016 ASH Annual Meeting in
San Diego, we have published our
journal online every two weeks. As
an open access journal, Blood Advances can be viewed by all interested colleagues worldwide. Blood
Advances Talks, our series of short
podcasts, has broached numerous
topics - from updates in the treatment of sickle cell anemia to global
hematology. We have published
debates on important controversies
via the Point-Counterpoint series,
and we hope you have enjoyed and
learned from these and other scholarly talks and articles. We continue
to be pleased with manuscript submission, both directly to Blood Advances and from our sister journal
Blood. We hope you have enjoyed the
high quality of those manuscripts
we have selected for publication
and that emerge from thoughtful,
thorough, rigorous peer review. Additionally, Blood Advances is now deposited in PubMed Central after the
one-year period required for new
journals, including all of the articles

published in the last year, as well as
all new published manuscripts.
We are excited by several new developments taking shape in the coming months. Blood Advances will soon
be adding a new content area called
Drug Advances, where we will share
reviews of recent drug approvals or
new indications of already approved
medications, relevant to the care of
patients with hematologic disorders
and reviewed by experts involved
in the development of these agents.
The journal also has plans to launch
a new podcast series called Community Conversations, where editorial
staff will interview authors of key
articles to add context and depth.
And this year, right here in Atlanta,
we will help shine a spotlight on the
Global Capacity-Building Showcase
and publish the posters that will be
featured under this important new
global poster category. This event
will unite our colleagues from all
corners of the world to share their
knowledge, expertise, and experiences for building capacity within
their unique environments.

What's New at the 59th ASH Annual
Meeting and Exposition?

ake the most of your experience at the meeting
by taking advantage of
some of the new and/or updated
resources that will be available:
PosterCast
This mobile app features a
pre-recorded three-minute audio
overview by the author of each
poster that you can listen to on
your personal mobile device,
similar to a self-guided audio
museum tour. The app is simple
to use - just scan the QR code on
participating posters, then listen
and view digital images (new this
year) as the authors discuss their
work.
Resilience Whiteboard Wall
With a global audience of
27,000 hematologists, the annual
meeting is the perfect opportunity to spark conversations to
learn from and inspire each other.
At this year's meeting, we are
asking attendees how they build

resilience in the face of factors that
might contribute to professional
burnout. Visit the whiteboard in
ASH Central (Hall B1), and share
your thoughts on how you build
resilience, balancing out your frustrations with healthy and positive
activities.
Global Capacity-Building Showcase
This poster exhibit puts the focus
on efforts and initiatives in low- to
middle-income countries where hematologic needs are underfunded.
The posters will be presented in a
digital format on TV monitors and
will cover topics such as diagnosing and treating hematologic malignances, stem cell transplantation,
and sickle cell treatments, among
others.
ASH Alexa
Another new feature at ASH this
year is Amazon's Alexa-controlled
Echo speaker. Attendees can ask
Alexa questions such as "Where is
the poster hall?"; "Does ASH offer

child care?"; and "When do shuttle buses operate?" Find "Alexa
Ask ASH Meeting" stations in 12
places throughout the convention center.
Enhanced Sessions Search
A new taxonomy of common
keywords applied to individual
presentations within the Education Program, Scientific Program,
Special-Interest Sessions, and
Oral Abstract Sessions will help
you identify talks and sessions related to your specific interests. In
addition to the standard keyword
search, you can now refine your
resulting list of presentations
with a second layer of keyword
options. The search features are
available on the ASH website, but
we recommend that you download the annual meeting mobile
app for optimal search functionality; you can search by disease,
therapy type, mechanism, technology/procedure, and study
population.
