Career Development Mentor:
Benjamin K. Tomlinson, MD, Case
Western Reserve University School
of Medicine
"My mentor encouraged me to
think critically about my research
project and to prepare smaller scale
talks for group meetings on a regular basis. This project will hopefully
help to find more ways to reduce
RBC adhesiveness to vessels and
reduce the frequency of crises. This
should improve long-term survival
and quality of life for patients with
SCD, and lead to a better understanding of differences in presentation between adults and children."

Jeffrey Edwards

of Medicine
Research Title:
Targeted inhibition of CREB for
the treatment of
pediatric acute
myeloid leukemia
Research Mentor: Kathleen
Sakamoto, MD,
PhD, Stanford
University School of Medicine
Career Development Mentor: Arturo Molina, MD, Sutro Biopharma
"I selected this project because of its
potential application to treatment
for acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
patients. As someone with an interest in cancer care in resource-limited settings, both here and abroad,
it was an eye-opening experience
to see what the drug development
process looks like at the bench.
Ideally, this project would identify
drugs that can be used for AML recurrence prevention, which could
improve the lives of many patients
in the future. My research mentor has challenged me to create a
relatively new path within the field
and has encouraged me to see that
my interests in serving people with
limited resources can be woven into
a career in hematology/oncology,
with research being a big component of that career."

Research Title:
Evaluating new

VLA-4 inhibitors with gro-βt to
mobilize hematopoietic stem cells/
progenitors cells
Research Mentor: John DiPersio,
MD PhD, Washington University
School of Medicine
Career Development Mentor: Ishmael Jaiyesimi, DO, MS, Beaumont
Cancer Center
"Our goal is to develop alternative,
less toxic and more robust hematopoietic stem cell mobilization regimens that would improve donor
and patient's convenience, reduce
cost, and shorten treatment time. I
firmly believe that developing and
testing novel mobilization strategies as well as understanding the
underlying molecular and cellular
mechanisms would substantially
contribute to the advancement of
patient care. Working with Dr. DiPersio has reinforced my belief that
everyday scientific findings can influence patient care immediately as
well as in the long term."
Lilian Iglesias
Case Western Reserve University
School of Medicine
Research Title:
Long-term outcomes of chronic
myeloid leukemia patients in
the United States
- Evolving risk
of second cancers and survival
trends
Research Mentor: Mikkael Sekeres,
MD, MS, Cleveland Clinic Taussig
Cancer Institute
Career Development Mentor: Connie Piccone, MD, Rainbow Babies
and Children's Hospital
"I believe my project can help solidify that the current standard treatment for CML is the best treatment
that we have and while it not only
greatly increases life expectancy in
patients it also disproves that the
treatment is associated with increased risk of second cancers."
Marjorie "Margaux" Johnson
Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University
Research Title: AN908, a novel
prodrug conjugate of butyrate and
δ-aminolevulinate increases γ-globin
gene expression
in erythroid progenitors
Research Mentor:
Betty Pace, MD,
Medical College
of Georgia at
Augusta University
Career Development Mentor:
Jeremy Pantin, MD, MBBS, Medical
College of Georgia at Augusta University

"My primary objective was to assess the ability of AN908 to induce
fetal hemoglobin. I selected the
project after meeting with Dr. Pace;
we mutually decided that this project would be one that would be
interesting and could also garner
good data during a short 8-week
period."
Lanair Amaad Lett
Perelman School of Medicine at the
University of Pennsylvania
Research Title: Investigating health
disparities in infection among
pediatric
patients with acute
leukemia
Research Mentor:
Richard Aplenc,
MD,
MSCE,
PhD, Perelman
School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Career Development Mentor: Kim
Smith-Whitley, MD, Children's
Hospital of Philadelphia
"My study examined whether the
likelihood of infection among pediatric patients with acute leukemia
differed by socioeconomic status.
The goal was to determine if infection might mediate the observed
disparities in survival and provide
a target for changing these outcomes. Dr. Aplenc and his group
provided the perfect opportunity
to learn how to execute this mission. His group includes clinicians,
statisticians, and epidemiologists
working on various projects in
health services, and it was a privilege to observe how they integrate
their diverse backgrounds and interests to serve the common goal of
improving health care."
Christina Marcelus
State University of New York
Upstate Medical University
Research Title:
Identifying
mechanisms
of resistance to
spliceosomal inhibitors for spliceosomal mutant leukemias
Research Mentor: Omar Abdel-Wahab, MD,
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center
Career Development Mentor: Melody Smith, MD, Memorial Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center
"Initially, my plan was to work on
novel means to target leukemia
cells with mutations in RNA splicing factors; however, the excitement
surrounding the characterization of
NTRK fusions in hematologic malignancies shifted the focus. Dr. Ab-

del-Wahab served as a phenomenal
research mentor. His expertise in
the functional genomics of hematopoietic malignancies was evident in
the way advised creative directions
for our project."
Lillian C. Nwanah
University of Illinois College of
Medicine Chicago, IL
Research Title:
D R E A M - re g u lated PI3K activity in platelet function and
thrombosis
Research Mentor:
Jaehyung Cho,
PhD, University
of Illinois at Chicago
Career Development Mentor: Damiano Rondelli, MD, University of
Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences
System
"In my research project, I was able
to explore thrombi kinetics and test
how certain peptides would affect the kinetics when a thrombus
is formed. This type of research
is especially meaningful because
my grandfather had a heart attack
when I was younger. Dr. Cho is a
great teacher. His depth of knowledge in his field and his passion for
his research is truly inspiring!"
Wilton E. Robinson, Jr., MPH
Georgetown University School of
Medicine
Research Title:
Predictors
of
treatment outcomes for relapsed diffuse
large B-cell lymphoma patients
Research Mentor:
Jonathon Cohen,
MD, MS, Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University
Career Development Mentor: David Bodine, PhD, National Institutes of Health
"Under the guidance of Dr. Cohen,
I had the pleasure of investigating
various prognostic factors impacting chance of survival for patients
experiencing a relapse of diffuse
large B cell lymphoma. I am strongly considering a career as a hematologist/oncologist, so I wanted
a research topic that provided a
sound introduction to the field
from a clinical approach. Previously, I had no plans of conducting
research as a physician; however, I
am now intrigued by the opportunities for enhanced patient care and
mentorship that making research
an active part of my clinical practice
can provide."
