Research Title:
Role of microbiome diversity
in shaping the
GVHD response
after allogeneic
HSCT
Research Mentor: Ran Reshef,
MD, MSc, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
Career Development Mentor: Suzanne Lentzsch, MD, PhD, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
"We are exploring how deviations
in microbial diversity and composition alter the immune reconstitution process post-hematopoietic
stem-cell transplantation [HSCT]
as evidenced by peripheral blood
samples. We hope that by studying
this relationship in patients who
had their immune system 'reset' by
HSCT, we can better understand
normal immune function and generate effective treatments for diseases such as graft-versus-host disease [GVHD]."

Research Title: Correlative studies
to examine the
effects of Alisertib therapy in patients with myelofibrosis
Research Mentor:
John D. Crispino, PhD, Northwestern University
Career Development Mentor: Michael R. Bishop, MD, University of
Chicago
"My work has focused on cell- and
animal-based models. As I was
finishing my first year in medical
school, I felt it appropriate to explore ways that I can positively impact a patient's life in a direct manner. My work with the Crispino Lab
strived to understand the efficacy
of a novel therapy for primary myelofibrosis. Speaking to my research
mentor was helpful in many ways,
and Dr. Bishop's experiences that
led him to become a hematologist
provided me with a blueprint for
my career trajectory and encourag-
es me to persevere in my academic
endeavors."

Research Title:
Analyzing
the
antigen expression profile on
multiple myeloma cells for CAR
T-cell therapy
Research Mentor:
Timothy Graubert, MD, Massachusetts General
Hospital Cancer Center
Career Development Mentor:
Courtney Fitzhugh, MD, National
Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,
National Institutes of Health
"I developed an interest in multiple
myeloma (and the factors associated with its progression), after a
family friend was diagnosed with it
a few years ago. This project gave
me the chance to appreciate the
heterogeneity of myeloma and will
add to the growing evidence in favor of personalized medicine in the
treatment of hematologic malignancies. Dr. Marcela Maus and Dr.
Timothy Graubert both were stellar
examples of great clinicians and researchers. Additionally, Dr. Maus'
work prompted me to change my
perspective on basic science research."

miR-15a mediated MYB gene
silencing: a novel approach to
induce fetal hemoglobin
Research Mentor: Betty Pace,
MD, Medical College of Georgia at
Augusta University
Career Development Mentor:
Abdullah Kutlar, MD, Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University
"I have always had an interest in
understanding sickle cell disease as
I was raised in Jamaica where the
disease prevalence is one of the highest in the region. Most of my prior
work in sickle cell disease focused
on improved detection of the disease;
however, this time around I wanted
to venture toward disease treatment.
My current work with Dr. Pace is
focused on seeking out additional
treatment alternatives to further minimize morbidity and mortality."

Research Title:
Mechanisms of
control of lysyl
oxidase expression in JAK2mutated myelofibrotic cells
Research Mentor: Katya Ravid,
DSc, PhD, Boston University School of Medicine
Career Development Mentor: Gabriela S. Hobbs, MD, Massachusetts
General Hospital
"I had previously been involved in
a project in our lab that involved the
pharmacologic inhibition of LOX in
the GATA1-low mouse model of
myelofibrosis and we found that
this lead to attenuation of bone
marrow fibrosis and MK count in
the bone marrow of these mice. I
then became interested in trying to
understand more about the mechanisms of LOX expression in myelofibrosis since we showed that LOX
is important in the progression of
the disease."

Research Title: Testing if TET3 is a
direct HIF target
during erythropoiesis
Research Mentor: Lucy Godley, MD, PhD,
The University
of Chicago Medicine
Career Development
Mentor:
Olatoyosi Odenike, MD, The University of Chicago Medicine
"This project may help to elucidate
the epigenetic role of 5-hmC with
the hope this trajectory of research
may yield targets for alternate
treatments of devastating diseases
like acute myeloid leukemia. Dr.
Godley has provided me with vital guidance with my scientific endeavors. Furthermore, she has provided an extraordinary example of
how medicine and science can pair
to yield a fruitful benefit for both
the laboratory and the clinic."

Research Title:
Disease knowledge and selfmanagement
skills
among
adolescents with sickle cell disease
Research Mentor: Jane Hankins,
MD, MS, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
Career Development Mentor: Maria del Pilar Aguinaga PhD, DLM
(ASCP), Meharry Medical College
"Dr. Hankins is one of the most
knowledgeable hematologists in
the country in the field of sickle
cell transitional care. In clinic, my
research focus can shed light on
barriers between pediatric to adult
care, so it is exciting and critical to
pushing the field forward. I see my
research as a contribution to a larger body of work to help sickle cell
patients live longer, more fulfilled
lives as adults."

Research Title: Hematopoietic
stem cell transplant and sickle cell
disease: how to
maximize
use
of this curative
therapy
Research Mentor: Staci Arnold, MD, MBA,
MPH,
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta/
Emory University
Career Development Mentor:
Kenneth I. Ataga, MD, University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Medicine
"I wanted to know if patients and
their families had any knowledge
of stem cell transplantation and
its potential as a cure. I was also
interested to see if there would
be a difference in awareness level
among patient populations at an
academic center with no transplant
capabilities vs an academic center
with transplant capabilities. Should
there be any discrepancy, this study
could help jumpstart the creation of
a standardized form of counseling
among all institutions so sickle cell
patients nationwide will receive the
same information about treatment
options."
Maria Emma Torres
Mayo Clinic School of Medicine
Research Title: A pilot study evaluating the impact of HHHs programs
on the quality of
life and mood
of patients and
their caregivers
following HSCT
Research Mentor:

Colón-Otero,
MD, Mayo Clinic Florida
