Giuseppe Bigi and Mary Rodes Gibson Memorial Awards
Recognize Outstanding Trainee Abstracts

uca Bertamini, MD, of the
University of Bologna, has
been awarded the 2017
American Society of Hematology
Giuseppe Bigi Memorial Award
in Hematopoiesis and Stem Cells.
This award was established in 2015
to recognize an Italian trainee based
at an Italian institution who has the
highest-scoring abstract submitted in the field of hematopoiesis
and stem cells. The award, named
after the late Italian hematologist
Giuseppe Bigi, MD, is made possible by a generous grant from the
Giuseppe Bigi Association. Dr. Bertamini is a graduate student at the
Seràgnoli Institute of Hematology,
Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine
(DIMES) in the University of Bologna, in Bologna, Italy. He thanks

the researchers who played a crucial role in making the study possible, especially Professors Nicola
Martinelli, Claudio Franceschi,
and Domenico Girelli. "It's a great
honor for me to receive this award.

I hope that it is just the beginning
of a long journey into the complex
and stimulating world of leukemia research." Dr. Bertamini will
present his abstract titled "Clonal
Hematopoiesis of Indeterminate

Potential (CHIP) in Patients with
Coronary Artery Disease and in
Centenarians. Further Clues Linking Chip with Cardiovascular Risk"
(abstract 1144) today at 5:30 p.m.
during poster session 501 Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Biology, in Hall A2 of the Georgia World
Congress Center.
Yunfeng Chen, PhD, of The
Scripps Research Institute, has
been presented with the 2017 Mary
Rodes Gibson Memorial Award in
Hemostasis and Thrombosis. This
award, which is part of the Outstanding Abstract Achievement
Award program, is granted to a
trainee who is the first author and
presenter of the highest-scoring
abstract submitted in the field of
