Beat AML Update
T
he Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society (LLS) has announced
the expansion of the Beat
AML Master Trial, which was originally launched in October 2016. The
past four decades have seen little
change in the standard of treatment
for acute myeloid leukemia (AML;
usually a combination of toxic chemotherapies). ASH recently partnered with LLS to help spread the
word about this pivotal trial, which
looks to test new, innovative therapies for AML - the cause of more
than 10,000 deaths every year.
To date, more than 130 patients
have enrolled in the trial, and seven leading cancer centers across
the United States are participating,
including the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center,
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center, Oregon Health & Science
University, Harold C. Simmons
Comprehensive Cancer Center at
University of Texas Southwestern,
University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of
Colorado Cancer Center, and the
University of Maryland Marlene
and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Four major
biopharmaceutical companies are
providing investigational targeted
therapies, with three more expected
to join soon. The number of active
treatment arms is now five.
The Beat AML Master Trial
should continue for at least two
years, eventually including 500 patients between 15 and 20 clinical
sites. ASH will continue to monitor
this trial in collaboration with LLS,
and update members accordingly.

ASH Congratulates the First Cohort
of MRHAP Winners
T
his year, ASH is proud to announce an entirely new program for underrepresented
minority residents, the ASH Minority Resident Hematology Award
Program (MRHAP), the goal of
which is to provide support for underrepresented minority residents
to conduct hematology-focused research with the intended outcome of
increasing interest in hematology research and choice of fellowship. This
new award program, much like the
MMSAP Flex experience (see page
B-8) is intended to fill the gaps in the
longitudinal pathway from medical student to hematologist by providing underrepresented minority
trainees with additional research opportunities and one-on-one interactions with both a research and career
development mentor. Participants
have the opportunity to perform
research within the full spectrum of
hematology ranging from stem cells
Elisa Quiroz, MD
Samuel Wilson, MD
to sickle cell disease to leukemia.
In addition to a $5,000 research
stipend for laboratory supplies and
statistical support, those selected
also receive a $1,000 travel allowance
to attend the ASH annual meeting;
$1,000 after the ASH annual meeting
for presenting their research at the
Promoting Minorities in Hematology
event; complimentary subscriptions
during residency to Blood, as well as
The Hematologist; the guidance of a research mentor and a career development mentor. Join ASH in congratulating Drs. Elisa Quiroz and Samuel
Wilson, and read more about their
