This open-label study will compare the efficacy
and assess the safety of oral selinexor
plus bortezomib (Velcade® once weekly) plus
low-dose dexamethasone (SVd) versus
bortezomib (twice weekly) plus low-dose
dexamethasone (Vd) in patients with Relapsed
or Refractory Multiple Myeloma
* Global trial enrolling ~360 patients with
1-3 prior lines of anti-myeloma therapy
* Both bortezomib-exposed and
bortezomib-naïve patients allowed
* SVd Arm: once weekly injection of
bortezomib for 4 out of 5 weeks
* Vd Arm: twice weekly bortezomib injection
2 out of 3 weeks x 8 cycles, then once
weekly 4 out of 5 weeks
* For Vd arm, crossover to SVd permitted
once progression is confirmed

s Dr. Roosevelt Thomas suggests in the quote above,
diversity in any industry or
field is widely considered to be a
strategic win. And beyond the beneficial optics of having a diverse
team or organization, there are data
to back this up. A recent Scientific
American article notes the decades of
research by organizational scientists
and others, showing how groups
with a diversity of race, ethnicity,
gender, and sexual orientation are
more innovative than homogeneous
groups, as diversity promotes and
encourages attributes such as diligence and open-mindedness. In the
field of hematology, ASH has long
acknowledged, and acted upon, the
strength and capacity that diversity
brings to the community of practice
and to patients.
Consider African Americans in
the United States: "Recent statistics
show that only 5 percent of practicing physicians are black, despite the
more than 13 percent of Americans
overall who are black," said Dr. Belinda R. Avalos, chair of the Committee on Promoting Diversity, in a re-
cent Chair's Corner article. "Studies
have shown that black patients are
more likely to seek out black physicians for their medical care and report higher satisfaction with a black
physician," she says, noting further
data indicating that more black physicians practice in low-income communities of color, where physicians
are relatively scarce.
With this understanding, in 2003,
ASH created the Minority Recruitment Initiative (MRI) with the goal
of recruiting and retaining more
underrepresented minority trainees
in the field of hematology. To lead
off this effort, the Minority Medical
Student Award Program (MMSAP)
was designed to attract medical
students at the very start of their
careers to hematologic research,
while the ASH-Amos Medical Faculty Development Program (ASHAMFDP) was created to provide
research funding to underrepresented minority scholars already in
the field, thereby encouraging academic and research appointments.
ASH followed these initiatives with
a program for PhD trainees called
the Minority Graduate Student Abstract Achievement Award (MGSAAA) to recognize meritorious abstract submissions and to provide
funds for travel to the ASH annual
