ASH Clinical Research Training Institute

T

he ASH Clinical Research
Training Institute (CRTI) is a
unique education and mentoring program for hematology fellows and junior faculty at academic
medical centers that offers a broad
education on clinical research methods, research collaborations, statistical analysis, and strategies for
managing the demands of family
and career. The goal of the institute
is to produce a group of researchers
armed with ideas for clinical hematology research and the tools and
access to resources to make their
ideas reality.
Dr. Brandon Blue of St. Louis
University in St. Louis, Missouri,
shared his unique experience with
the program and its participants.
Although he had spoken with former participants and faculty members about the impact of CRTI on
their careers, Dr. Blue was not sure
how the program would specifically affect his own career. "I applied to CRTI not knowing the final
impact," he recalls. "But I knew the
level of research training and networking would only have a positive outcome in my future."
Dr. Blue was in for a pleasant surprise: His fellow alums and the program faculty helped mold his career
path significantly, especially during
uncertain times. He explained that

"Future applicants and
participants of CRTI should
know the experience at
CRTI is life changing."
- Brandon Blue
fellow CRTI participants created a
"think-tank" network to share research ideas and career advice, and
to review recent literature. Dr. Blue
likens his network to a family within the larger hematology community. Each month, group members
discuss emerging breakthroughs,
bounce research ideas off each other, and find ways to support one
another's careers. The faculty members are also instrumental to the career success of participants. "CRTI
faculty continues to be involved in
my career and are available for conference calls, rapid email responses,
and in-person meet-ups."
Dr. Blue urges those considering CRTI participation to take the
plunge. "Future applicants and
participants of CRTI should know
the experience at CRTI is life changing." He mentions that the collegial
relationships one develops can continue beyond the week-long training course. While the program is
time intensive, Dr. Blue believes
that it is the most rewarding training program offered in the United

States. Dr. Blue praises the institute's one-on-one learning opportunities as well as the career advice
and mentorship provided by CRTI
faculty. "This is not the cookiecutter advice routinely given to fellows. They personalize every step
of the CRTI process to help make
your career as successful as possible."
The 2018 CRTI application cycle
is now open. Eligibility reviews
must be submitted online by 11:59
p.m. Eastern time, January 6, 2018.

Sunday's Continuing Conversations With the Speakers

C

ontinuing Conversations
with the Speakers sessions are informal discussions with scientific program
session speakers that will give
interested individuals, especially trainees and junior investigators, increased accessibility
both to information on the topic
and to the opinions of experts in
those particular fields. The dynamic nature of these sessions
is meant to provide an increased
opportunity for scientific peers
to form collaborations and partnerships. The format of these
sessions is an interactive discussion for a limited audience on a
first-come, first-served basis. Attendees should come prepared
to actively participate in the discussions.
Novel Epigenetic
Modifications in Cancer
and Development
Join Drs. Figueroa, Rao, and
Lyko to continue discussions
on mechanisms influencing epigenetic modifications. This Continuing Conversations with the
Speakers session complements

the Scientific Program session
on Novel Epigenetic Modifications in Cancer and Development and provides an increased
opportunity for scientific peers
to form collaborations and partnerships.
