NAFA’s Sustainable Fleet Awards Recognizes Green Accomplishments “ t’s quite an association that gives you an award for creative financing,” said Yvan Lupien, Branch Manager, Fleet Services Branch, for the City of Ottawa. “Usually it lands you in jail!” Lupien was one of four winners of NAFA’s Sustainable Fleet Awards on Tuesday, April 24 to go along with nine honorable mentions in one of the strongest fields to date in the award’s five-year history. The award presentation was hosted by Joe LaRosa, NAFA’s International Vice President. It was a bit of a whirlwind weekend for LaRosa who joined NAFA’s Board of Trustees just a few days earlier. “NAFA’s putting me to work already!” he quipped. LaRosa noted that while this was the fifth consecutive year NAFA has presented Sustainable Fleet Awards to salute the individuals and organizations who are doing outstanding work in the area of sustainability, NAFA’s interest in the environment isn’t something new. “We’ve been actively working on sustainability issues for nearly 40 years. In fact, our former President Warren Feirer once accepted an award from President Carter on behalf of NAFA’s efforts in planning I Former NAFA President Gayle Pratt (right) is presented NAFA’s Sustainable Fleet Award from Rick Sikes (center), Chair of NAFA’s Fuels & Technology Advisory Council, and Joe LaRosa, NAFA’s International Vice President. fuel conservation in the late 1970s!” said LaRosa. The first Sustainable Fleet Award winner was Tony Saxon, CAFM, Fleet Manager at Georgia Power Company. His fleet was one of the earliest pioneers of biodiesel and E85 ethanol in Georgia. They began using biodiesel in 1999 and E85 ethanol three years later. To date, they have used over 6 million gallons of B20 biodiesel and over 390,000 gallons of E85 ethanol. Georgia Power has remained dedicated to the use of alternative fuels and has been a leader in the purchase of fuel-efficient vehicles, hybrids, and electric vehicles to help reduce the use of petroleum. “I’d like to thank all of the companies that are here today – all who got the honorable mentions and all who will be receiving the awards as well as everyone here that does their part to make the environment better for future generations. I really appreciate that,” said Saxon. Lupien then received his award for his creation of an innovative “Green Fleet Capital Account” that helped provide the funds for Ottawa to replace its older vehicles with more fuel efficient ones and through “right-sizing”. When the city provided Lupien with $500,000 in new capital to fund the transition to alternative vehicles, he used the funds to “top up” purchases instead of simply paying for the total cost of an individual vehicle. This way allowed him to finance solely the green portion of the vehicles and allow the fund’s money to go further. NAFA’s third Sustainable Fleet Award winner was Greg Hodgdon, CAFM, Fleet Operations for E.A. Sween Company who was recognized for his company’s work in helping to develop a new fuel-efficient, lightweight, and cost-effective truck. After determining that alternative fuels weren’t the best fit for his company, Hodgdon sought out help crafting an innovative new truck design that would significantly improve fuel economy without sacrificing customer satisfaction. Ultimately, the company would work with Isuzu for the diesel chassis, Johnson Truck Bodies for the lightweight shell, Thermo King for the refrigeration unit, and ARI for the truck expertise and analytical tools that would help calculate the design’s impact on cost and efficiency. “I was honored when ARI was willing to take on the case study and Continued on page 7 http://www.nafa.org
