The festival season begins in June and continues right up to midSeptember. There are two summer songs I never get tired of hearing. One is The Loving Spoonful’s 1966 hit Summer in the City. The lyrics were written by lead singer John Sebastian’s brother Mark when he was just 15! The other summer classic is the the great Gershwin song Summertime written in the 1930s. According to Wikipedia, Summertime ties with the Beatles’ Yesterday as the most covered song in popular music. There are an estimated 2,600 versions. Summertime and the living is easy in Greater Sudbury. Some times it feels like the entire city is at the lake during July and August. Unlike most other places around the world, people rich, poor and in the middle can enjoy this city’s clean lakes and public beaches. There is no admission charge. No cabana boy to tip or locker to rent. Many beaches are easy to get to by bus, bicycle or by foot. The views are free. Northern Lights Festival Boréal is another one of the things we love about living in Sudbury. In this issue, Todd Robson talks to musicians Nathan Lawr and Kate Maki, who will be appearing at the festival in July. Bob Bale gives us the lowdown on the local Meltdown contest winners who will also be performing at NLFB. The Blueberry Festival will take place from July 13 to 20. It wouldn’t be summer without a feast of blueberries. Chef Michael Cullen has prepared a tasty recipe for the “Northern pearl.” A special thanks goes to all the people in this city who volunteer to give us a summer of festivals.
