Getaways: East ircle your calendar for the week of Aug. 10 to 17 when Sturgeon Falls hosts the 12th Annual Step Dance and Fiddle Festival. Camping sites with water and electrical hookups are available on the Sturgeon Falls Recreation Centre grounds. Rates are reasonable and include free access to recreational facilities. During your stay, take a walk around the Sturgeon River House Museum. This rebuilt fur trading post and pioneer village offers a glimpse of the area’s history dating back to the mid-1800s. After a stop in Sturgeon Falls, continue your travels the short distance to North Bay. The city, “just north enough to be perfect,” offers a wide variety of interesting sights and activities. Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy three full days of family fun at North Bay’s Summer in the Park. The event is being held on the Civic Holiday long weekend, Aug. 1 to 3 at Lee Park. Plan to stay a few extra days. There is so much to see and do in North Bay. Take leisurely strolls along endless groomed paths through the Laurier Woods Trail, the Kinsmen Trail, and the Kate Pace Way. Hike the trails around the Education Centre and treat yourself to the natural beauty of Duchesney Falls. Pack your bikes and rollerblades. The North Bay waterfront on the shore of beautiful Lake Nipissing features two miles of walkway leading directly to the Heritage Carousel, the Heritage Mini-Train and the Chief Commanda II cruise. C 56 Sudbury Living Summer 2008 sudburylivingmagazine.ca A ride on the Heritage Carousel is a unique experience. This full-scale traditional carousel was created by local carvers and artists. The Heritage Mini-Train is an actual steam engine and diesel engine-powered locomotive running on 2,700 feet of 15-inch gauge track. Hand your ticket to the conductor and get ready to travel back through time. The Chief Commanda II is a 320-passenger twin-hull catamaran vessel that travels the same route as the early voyageurs. Afternoon and sunset dinner cruises offer a spectacular view of the escarpment. Visit the Model Railway Exhibit, conveniently located at the Tourist Information Centre on Highway 11. You can also take in the sights at the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defence and the North Bay Area Museum. No trip to North Bay would be complete without a visit to the Dionne Quints Homestead Museum. This museum exhibits clothing, toys and dolls from the girls’ childhood in the humble home where the quintuplets were born in 1934. The home was moved to North Bay from nearby Corbeil. The museum is open from mid-May to midOctober. Before wrapping up your stay, climb aboard the Dream Catcher Express for a scenic 200 kilometre train ride from North Bay to Temagami and back.
