d e s t i n ation yukon practical information Seasons Northern summers are sunny and warm, but the weather can be unpredictable. Northern winters require insulated clothing. Layering is a smart strategy at any time of the year. Refer to the chart on the inside front cover for suggested clothing. Some tourist services, such as campgrounds and summer attractions, open mid-May and close by October. Accommodation and other services are widely available year-round. Banking & Money Whitehorse has branches of Canada’s five major banks, a Western Union and a First Nations Bank. Twenty-four-hour automated teller machines are available in most Yukon communities. Exchange rates Getting Around With 11 diverse highways to explore, the Yukon is a driver’s dream. Whitehorse has complete RV and vehicle rental agencies. RV service shops are available in most communities. Gas stations are located at regular intervals on most highways. On secondary roads, be sure to check where the next fuel stop is located before setting out and consider carrying extra gas depending on the route you decide to take. Though most travel through the Yukon will be on paved roads, your vehicle should be in good mechanical condition. Be prepared to travel on hard-packed gravel roads when venturing off the primary highways. If you prefer to have someone else do the driving, guided coach and van tours are also available. Many Yukon businesses participate in the Fair Exchange Program, a Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon initiative, to ensure visitors receive fair value for their U.S. funds. Look for these signs. Taxes Most goods and services are subject to six per cent national sales tax (GST). There are no territorial or municipal sales taxes in the Yukon. Tipping Service is rarely included in billing. Tips range from 15 per cent to 20 per cent of the total bill. Medical insurance and Services Excellent medical facilities are available in Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Dawson City, while many smaller communities have nursing stations and on-call medical staff. Fishing in Yukon The Yukon is a dream for fishing enthusiasts who drop a line in the water whenever they happen to camp by a lake, river or one of our four-star fly-in fishing lodges where some fish have never seen a lure. Fishing licences are available at most sporting goods stores, gas stations, other commercial outlets and Environment Yukon offices. A separate National Park fishing licence is required in Kluane National Park. RV on North Klondike Highway – YG Crossing a Border into the u.S. All persons, including U.S. citizens, travelling by air to the United States are required to present a valid passport or Air NEXUS card. From June 2009, all persons, including U.S. citizens, travelling by land and sea to the United States will be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. Unaccompanied persons under 18 should bring a letter of permission.
