3-D PriNtiNg goes MaiNstreaM

ramingham, mass.-based Staples Inc. re-
cently partnered with 3D Systems to launch
a pilot in-store 3-D printing services program. The experimental service centers-located at
Staples stores in New York and Los Angeles-feature
an immersive experience that allows consumers
and small businesses to create personalized products and use 3-D printing hardware. Customers
also can bring in their own ready-to-print 3-D files
to have them printed.
"3-D printing offers enormous potential for
small businesses, and by using Staples, they can
print with the technology without having to invest
in it," says Damien Leigh, senior vice president of
business services for Staples. "The test with 3D Systems will help us learn about our customers' needs
for a local 3-D printing service, and how Staples
can help them make more happen for their business through 3-D printing."
In May 2013, Staples announced that it would
be the first major U.S. retailer to carry 3-D printers, with the launch of the Cube from 3D Systems
on staples.com. The company has since rolled out
3-D printing hardware and accessories in a limited
number of stores, and expanded its overall product

ew York's Lim College recently received
approval from the New York State Board of
Regents to offer the nation's first master's
degree program in visual merchandising. Launching in fall 2014, the LIM College master of professional studies (MPS) in visual merchandising will
prepare students for career paths that could lead to
executive positions, such as corporate visual merchandising directors at department and specialty
stores, creative directors at retail design firms and
industry supply firms, or showroom directors.
"We are very proud to offer the nation's first
master's degree program in visual merchandising,"
says Elizabeth S. Marcuse, LIM College president.
"This program is a logical evolution of both the field
of visual merchandising and LIM College's role in
educating future leaders in the business of fashion."
The 30-credit program will teach the principles,
philosophies and technologies of visual merchandising through exploration of the marketplace,
hands-on classroom learning and field experimentation, with an emphasis on sustainable design.

Students also will be able to complete a supplementary three-credit internship/shadowing program.
Full-time students will complete the program in
three semesters throughout one calendar year, but
to accommodate students with full-time jobs, all
coursework also will be offered in the evening.
"Visual merchandising is an indispensable part
of any retail strategy," says Eric Feigenbaum, chair
of LIM College's visual merchandising department.
"This program is grounded in the premise that today's
retailer must understand the aesthetic component of
their business and approach it as a profit center. Over
the last several years, the field has moved from the
basement studio to the executive boardroom."
