show talk 010 Back to the Future DOUG HOPE FOUNDER AND SHOW DIRECTOR, GLOBALSHOP doug.hope@emeraldexpo.com @globalshopshow I N 1999, KURT ANDERSEN wrote one of the best novels I've ever read, "Turn of the Century," a sprawling, wildly satirical and "excruciatingly deft portrait of our age." It was not only a right-now view of a media-driven lifestyle in New York, but also a view into the outrageous and unbelievable future. In it, Andersen describes businesses and technology that did not then exist, including Barbie World in Las Vegas, takeout from Hiroshima Boy and an on-demand limo service called "Go!Now!" As audacious as the idea of Barbie World or Go!Now! was in 1999, a Barbie store did open 10 years later in Shanghai, and we now have a version of Go!Now! called Uber. Reading the book, one's head spins with the imagination put into the novel, which is often compared to Tom Wolfe's infamous "The Bonfire of the Vanities." As brash as the novel was at the time, it's downright tame and mundane by today's standards. The future isn't what it used to be. Again, as outrageous as some of the ideas seemed at the time, they have been accepted and integrated into today's stores and consumer behavior. Today, it's never been more obvious that a new future is bearing down on all of us, which creates not only great challenges, but also unlimited opportunity for growth. Those retailers that are the most savvy will no doubt choose and apply new ideas, new products and concepts that may seem far-fetched today.
