That may be alright if you're less than 30 years old, but even that is not too soon, considering when today's senior managers in the industry started building their bench. Think about past recipients of the industry's highest honor, the Markopoulos Award, like Ignaz Gorischek, Tony Mancini, Judy Bell or even Andy Markopoulos himself, and what they were doing at age 30. Or 40. They didn't wait until they were older before they became mentors to someone else. They started doing it at the outset, working in tandem with anyone they could move along. It's a bit like parts of the Tough Mudder Pledge: "I put teamwork and camaraderie before my course time" and "I help my fellow Tough Mudders complete the course." These may sound like "feel good" quotes, but that's how they participate-and it's very much in the spirit of mentoring. When you think about the events and meetings you attend, do you see anyone in their 20s? If not, is it because there isn't anyone on your team that young? Or perhaps you have not invited them along? Do you share the latest news, strategies, tactics and innovations with everyone on the team? If so, you're on the right path to mentorship. But maybe that's not enough. It's no secret that the talent pool is diminishing in the retail design industry, potentially in part due to reduced workforces in the retail sector, and possibly because of increased dependency on outsourcing. But, that doesn't change our obligation to bring along the next generation, and mentoring the staﬀ may fall short of the need. This is not only to encourage those that have already opted for a career in retail design, but also to motivate others to choose that path. Some retailers and design firms already do this, but if we're to develop the forth-coming pool of talent, we need more of it or the rate of replacements will fall short. As an industry, our best formal approach to fulﬁlling this need is PAVE (the Planning and Visual Education Partnership, paveinfo.org), which was founded in 1992. From its inception, GlobalShop has supported PAVE both financially and through extensive media exposure, and we're expanding that commitment as we move forward. But, PAVE needs you, too-not only for monetary support, but also for your time, through a variety of programs its leadership has created to reach out to the student community (our future workforce!). The store design profession may not be facing extinction, but a threatening talent shortage cries for today's leaders to recruit and groom those leaders of tomorrow.
